Ok other than playing with a bow as a kid, I do not know jack about them. And form no influence from anyone in the family or friends, my 5 year old says he wants a bow and arrow set for Christmas.

Anyone with any advice on what to buy for a 5 year old, keep in mind how fast a 5 year old changes there interest, but if he likes it, I would possible get something for myself as well. I would love to take him target shooting.

Can't wait till he's old enough to go shooting with my handguns, but I don't think he could hold my 44 right now.

Browning did make a youth compound bow several years ago that was the real deal. It had a huge adjustment window for draw length and draw weight. Probably others also now, but I'm no longer in the market.

Mathews makes a great kids/ youth bow, it is called the Genesis. It might be a little more money then what you want to spend on a bow for a 5 year old.

I suspect that at this age, you don't need fancy or expensive. As you say...he may try it a few times and throw it in the closet for the next garage sale.

I would think that more important than the bow is an avenue to use it...target...back drop so that his arrows don't end up in the neighbor's yard...or dog!

Some real direction and times to use this thing would be the real determining thing if he will move this into a regular fun thing.

I remember as a kid my first bow and it got the heck used out of it and handed down to my brothers...who did likewise.

It was a fun thing to do....even if I did almost shoot my brother's eye out. Oversight on this can't be stressed enough....and for the hand gun thing....keep him far from the 44 mag. A good pellet pistol could, however be a thing that gets his mojo going in that department. Nothing quite like shooting soup cans at 15 feet to teach the lessons needed to be taught here. Gradually moving to a .22 and some real fun.

Go to your local sporting good store. I just bought a small compound bow for my sons for 30.00, it seems nice and has ofset cams so once pulled they can hold it easily. Not sure of the brand but they had a few different sizes and draw strengths to chose from.

I do agree that a nice CO2 pistol would be fun as well. Both my kids have soft air guns and BB/pellet CO2 pistols. Taught them well at a young age and they enjoy target shooting pop cans and such.

We do not hunt but do enjoy "guy time" shooting the guns. Its really neat to see how well they behave and focus on being safe when supervised correctly.

Thanks for the replies, I think we may have to stop at some store and just have him hold a few, it does not sound like I can just buy him one.

Supervision is a must with most things a 5 years old does. But even more so with a firearm, even just BB guns. My dad was able to teach me the do's and don't for handling a firearms, and I'm sure little did I know at the time, when he started me off with a BB gun it was all just prep work for the big ones. I hope to pass on the respect and knowledge for all weapons to my kids. I do not want them to fear any weapons, there just tools, if used properly.

My dad started me out shooting with him when I was about 10. Bought me my first rife when I turned 12. It is just a 22 but still one of my favorite guns to shoot, not sure if that is the fact that he bought it for me or or it was my first gun.
