So in a addition to a chainsaw and shuvels we should bring along our sidearms for the trail brushing weekend?

Seriously that would concern the heck out of me if I had small kids or dogs in the area. Stay on gaurd John!

"...Cougars are classified as an endangered species in Michigan. It is unlawful to kill, harass or otherwise harm a cougar except in the immediate defense of human life..."

That's funny! If I came into contact with one in the wild, I would certainly act in immediate defense!

You better be careful Wayne! You now have more than Bobcats to worry about!

Either that, or make sure you are not the smallest, tastiest looking one in your work group!

I am actually pretty concerned and will be carrying on any hike in the woods I take and we will be keeping a much closer eye on the dogs when they are outside playing. We already watch Gracie like a hawk.

I should be safe! Amy is pretty small compared to me!

I bet you do!!! Next thing you will have to get her is a gun rack for F150 powerwheels.

I also think a spare of undershorts would be good to bring a long on the walks. If I have to use my sidearm, I will probably need to change my shorts afterward.

Honest to goodness...these photoshop images sure can get folks worked up.

No doubt this cat decided that things were too hot back home and wanted to take a vacation along the cool side of the big lake....who can blame him for that?

If yah look closely you can see his holiday inn key around his neck! Jist like any other celeb....there's always sumbody with a camera willin to wreck your day! And now the DNR is look'n like the poperrotzy!!!

Journalists. Okay, the article acknowledges the Cat has a collar, won't it have made sense to ask the DNR "are you tracking this"? Where did it come from? etc.

Yep, danger level just went up a little in this neck of the woods.

Used to be the only place you could find a cougar was at the UP Hill 41! :D

We have plenty of Cougars around here. They lurk around bars in the high rent district.

They say to make eye contact (I think, or don't make eye contact), don't run, stretch your jacket out over your head to make yourself look bigger, pick up small children (or dogs) and NEVER run if you see one. If one does attack keep fighting and never play dead.

Chances are you'll survive an attack as there aren't too many recorded fatalities.

Every time I have been to the UP this spring/summer/fall I have carried. Not worth the chance of running into something in the woods that wants to eat you.

LOL

"The DNR is still in the process of tracking down where the cougar is from and has been checking frequencies from collars of cats from South Dakota. Only western states currently have cougars collared for research projects, so the animal likely traveled a great distance to reach the Upper Peninsula."

So educate me...aren't there cougars in the UP? - I mean besides the one in question here...

Has anyone ever seen the Jim Gaffigan stand up when he talks about bears and what to do if you encounter one? Is pretty hysterical - this just reminded me of it. One of his funnies was "Who wrote this crap? The BEARS?" regarding playing dead. :)

All fun aside for a moment, I don't know why the DNR won't just admit that we do have Cougar here in the Western UP & more than the one recently captured on a game cam. They have been here for some time now. This one has apparently migrated from outside of our area, hmmm, why do you suppose that is? I'm sure it's not because it thought it was going to have God's Country all to itself.-Mezz
