John, Have noticed that there has been a lot of north, north/west winds so far this season with cold temps and warm lake superior water, shouldn't there be more lake effect snows in your neck of woods or are there more variables that need to be in place for the snow machine to get fired up. One more question... with the early cold, could that make early ice on the big lake? it seems down here that the water in lake Michigan cooling rapidly.

There are a number of other factors besides cold temps and winds blowing over the lake that determine if lake effect will fall and at what intensity. This topic has been discussed before and I did do a pretty extensive write up on it. It should be there in the way-back volumes of the Ask John.

Late yesterday, I realized I had forgotten to answer part 2 of your question.

The current cold could lead to early ice on the big lake. Although that will depend more on the occurrence of bitterly cold air being over the lake as we head into the heart of winter (late Dec through Jan and early Feb).
