Coming to Lake Gogebic area this weekend for a couples trip, with first time riders. Heard there is some slush developing on the lake was hoping someone could update on how much and location.

I rode the on Lake Gogebic over this past weekend with my 16 yo son. Slush areas that I rode across were mostly frozen, so hold onto your handlebars as you can get thrown around a bit. If you venture off the beaten path you probably will run into slushy areas that are covered with snow. However, if you stay on the trails/path of previous riders you should be fine.

Just remember this, riding on any lake can be dangerous. You need to decide whether is worth the risk.

Rode the lake last Thursday from the bottom to the top, only slush I saw was the frozen type. just hold a little bit going over it.

correct, ride to the bridge and pick up trail 100 right there. always tracks to follow.

also can cut through the park and jump on 1.

ok that was what I was not sure of..usually if it's plowed you cannot ride it (forest roads) but otherwise you can ride in the right of way on normal roads unless marked.

Stayed at Gogebic Lodge from Saturday night to Tuesday night and rode the lake from the Hoop and rode straight across to Root Cellar a few times, it was always at night from the Hoop so I never saw any water in the tracks of anyone from our group and after the snow they got Monday and Tuesday the frozen slush spots were better, but I still wouldn't try and set any speed records. When we would cross the lake in the mornings, you would see water in the tracks of the person ahead of you in the spots that had deeper snow. We were going at a speed of around 55 and didn't stop. I probably wouldn't go across with first timers and I would keep the speed down going north and south when you hit those bare ice spots. The best snow and trails are north of Bergland. 102, 1, 12, 3, and 8 was good in mornings and choppy at night. Have fun

Thanks justride, I am heading up there Wed to Sunday, staying at the Root Cellar. You said there are bare ice spots on the lake? When you say frozen slush, I hope you aren't talking about those 12" deep truck ruts that were all over the lake last year, those things were brutal!
I hope the warm up Sat doesn't do too much damage. I hope John's "pink" forecast next week comes true. Can't wait.
If anyone has any recent intel on Lake Gogebic in general, please supply.

I was on Lake Gogebic last Friday. Had lunch at the Root Cellar. We rode across the Lake from Gogebic Lodge to the Root Cellar and noticed the rough ice spots mentioned by justride in his post above - about 200 to 500 yards out from the shore. They're not as bad a some spots we've encountered on Gogebic, but they'll hurt if you're doing 50mph. The wet slushy areas are clearly just top slush, so keep the track moving and you'll be fine - just warn the novices in your group ahead of time because they might be un-nerved by seeing that. The west side of the lake is frozen solid with a lot of north/south traffic. Remember - avoid the east side of the lake in the Bergland Bay area where the lake drains into the stream - its either very thin ice or open water.

Thanks Marty700. Regarding the East part of the Lake, how close is that spot to where one would exit lake to get to Berglund Bay Bar, Antonios area? Is it near there, or further East?

Sledhead, if you are coming from the south just ride up west side of lake and go all the way to north end and then go east to where you get off to go into Bergland. You will be fine that way. There will be plenty of tracks to follow.

fishcrib's exactly right - that's the way to go. Head up the West side of the lake to the Hoop 'n Holler, then turn right and follow the tracks East to the public park access at Bergland and exit the lake there and you'll be fine.

Does anyone have and fresh intel for Gogebic and North? Looks like they should get 6-8" of fresh snow Tue/Wed which should replace all that was lost from the warm up.
I'll be up Wed-Sun, hope to see some of you out and about!
