lake ice safe

I have been going to st germain wisconson since 1977 always asked how the lakes are even if they are marked but has me thinkin realey how do they know they are safe do they test the area where the trail goes over the lake with the groomer or just info from the ice fisherman ? after all these years you would think I have the answer but just thought about it. thanks for any come back in advance. alley mechanic.
