From the icefishing report for Lake Gogebic.

"Ice conditions still vary,so use caution. Also be aware of ice heaves. More snow coming so also expect some slush in some areas. Snowmobiles and 4-wheelers have been accessing fine."

safety first,,,,,not worth your life, dont take the chance,,,,,,,

Not to get on a soap box here but every time someone asks about ice people come out and say exactly what classic posted "don't do it, not worth it, think about your family, etc". Lakes are never safe at any time of the year. Weather, hidden objects, poor ice, cold water, ice heaves, etc are all potential dangers on a lake. Every time you go out on a lake, regardless of being on a boat, sled, raft or swimming you are taking a calculated risk. Brit took the first step of trying to get educated about ice conditions before venturing out, exactly what you should do. I am not trying to pick on classic, simply suggesting we provide useful information rather than blanket statements that do not help make an educated decision on where to ride.

Use your head and be safe.

Thank You!! Well put! That is a pet peeve of mine. People ask a simple question like above and so many people don't answer the question! They just worry about trying to save the world! LOL! DANGER Don't do it! Yikes! Give the person the useful info they asked for and let them think for themselves!!

Thanks scott_b and cdsprague, I agree! We are staying on Lac View Desert next week and I was also wondering if the ice is going to be thick enough to go on to access the trail. I emailed the resort owner this morning to check and see what the ice measurements were so far (I have yet to hear anything).

My take on it : Isn't it better to be on here asking about it than just crossing your fingers and flying across the lake?

There are land trails and bridges all the way from mercer to copper so you really don't even have to cross any lakes??? Any of the other smaller lakes will be marked with barrels, cones or sticks when clubs feel their safe both in the UP and Wisconney... Unlike south here where its travel at yer own risk...

Just a few short days ago, there was no ice (early Dec). Heavy snow provides insulation from the cold temps. Not sure the circustances but I think someone went thru some ice on a small pond or something this past weekend.

December ice is NEVER safe in my book.

Which resort are you staying at? Thunder Bay Resort is a good winter destination and Jim and Rochelle are usually quick to answer email questions. They also do guided on and off trail rides, rent sleds, have gas, etc. A couple new winter ready cabins were completed last year as well. http://www.thunder-bay-resort.com/

i have to second the opinion of jim, rochelle and thunder bay resort. they are as accomadating as can be, the cabins are very nice (always clean when we get there, not so much when we leave) and they are supporters of the site. you cant go wrong any time of year there. be warned though, if you are a jimmie johnson fan, you might not want to mention that to rochelle.

I appreciate the feedback especially the few posts supporting my original question. The intent here was to get real reports rather then hear-say. By no means will I attempt to cross a lake unless I know others have without issue. I will go out of the way to ride on land if need be…

Thanks all -

Thanks for the info, I'll keep that in mind. We are staying at the Wind Drift Resort. We stayed there two years ago and it was pretty decent. Dave's gotta be about one of the friendliest guys I've meet.

6 inches of ice Sunday on Spectacle Lake in Phelps,WI. Lake Has 2 40 foot holes in each bay so stayed away from them. I crossed end to end on 16th & was slushy in some areas crossed again today a lot less slush. Fished with kids on Saturday & Sunday drilled bunch of holes all about 6 inches of ice. Fishing stunk. Rode by North Twin lake today no one out on lake & talked to another rider & he heard ice was 6 inches & in some areas 2 inches & slush. No lake trails marked yet. Still iffy & different lake to lake. Up to you what lake to ride or stay off. I imagine there will be a lot of riders taking a bath between Xmas - New Years. Very different this year good snow thin ice. We need 2-3 days -30 F below. Lots of zero temps but ice slow to thicken :>(

Thanks wags, I stumbled upon that site late last night.

Here's Dave's reply...
"As of now the lake only has 2-3" solid base ice. And this last Sat., a couple guys dropped their ATV in the lake, 9 ft. of water, and right about where I place my barrels for the trail !!! You can see from the attached photo, there is now a 100 ft. swath of open water from where the divers cut to remove it yesterday. There have been a couple sleds running around on the lake, but for now I wouldn't advise it. Hopefully by next week it will have gained a few more inches."

The attached photo is them retreiving the ATV. No thanks!

We're headed up next week as well. I've sunk in a river in February and have no intention of ever doing it again. My rule of thumb- if it's marked and there are solid tracks- I'm good to go. That being said, I don't dither around... follow the trail, move quickly, and get the heck off. My guess it's going to vary greatly depending on the lake at this point. If you have solid info (thanks Whitedust)- please keep posting. It's much appreciated.
