Not to get on a soap box here but every time someone asks about ice people come out and say exactly what classic posted "don't do it, not worth it, think about your family, etc". Lakes are never safe at any time of the year. Weather, hidden objects, poor ice, cold water, ice heaves, etc are all potential dangers on a lake. Every time you go out on a lake, regardless of being on a boat, sled, raft or swimming you are taking a calculated risk. Brit took the first step of trying to get educated about ice conditions before venturing out, exactly what you should do. I am not trying to pick on classic, simply suggesting we provide useful information rather than blanket statements that do not help make an educated decision on where to ride.
Use your head and be safe.
Thanks scott_b and cdsprague, I agree! We are staying on Lac View Desert next week and I was also wondering if the ice is going to be thick enough to go on to access the trail. I emailed the resort owner this morning to check and see what the ice measurements were so far (I have yet to hear anything).
My take on it : Isn't it better to be on here asking about it than just crossing your fingers and flying across the lake?
Which resort are you staying at? Thunder Bay Resort is a good winter destination and Jim and Rochelle are usually quick to answer email questions. They also do guided on and off trail rides, rent sleds, have gas, etc. A couple new winter ready cabins were completed last year as well. http://www.thunder-bay-resort.com/
