John, I think you need a GIANT banner at the top of the ask john page, stating the lake temp will be the same in December as it is in every December. Would save you the trouble of answering this question year after year after year.......lol.

snolover1 is right. Lake temps in the late summer or early autumn do not play a significant factor in total lake effect snowfall production for the season. If temps are a bit warmer to start the season, that might enhance (increase) some of the early season LES events (Nov, early Dec), but then by later December, the lake temps are almost always sitting within a degree or two of their long term average.

It's important to note that when we speak of "lake temps", we are only talking about the top 20-30 feet of water, below that, there is not much change from season so season and year to year. A big autumnal storm can send lake temps crashing by 10-15 degrees with the stirring caused by the wave action alone.

From TWC, August 15, 2017: "Climate Change is Threatening Great Lakes" (video, 0 min. + 58 sec.), quoted here in part:
"Warmer temperatures mean that the lakes are freezing later and that the ice is melting earlier in the spring.
"This means that the lake has more time without ice, to warm up, meaning that ice, once again, forms later in the year, creating kind of a vicious cycle of less and less ice."

just an FYI...we get most of our snow from asia due to evaporation...and due to this effect the US and Europe have formed CHARIS to see the scientific effects....it states that this project is to determine the glaciers effects over there (high asia they call it)...but it really is a joint effort and we pay for it all since most of it effects the US weather first....so reports will be about their rivers and such...but the real research is about how it effects our snow cover in winter...and what drives the new storms like Harvey....saying US AID or putting it under this means less people btching and moning about the money spent on it..the second link below is also aboot the same event only the dust
