Left Knee Hurts Like A MF'R

For those who don't know, I sprained my ankle really bad in July. I am 90% over that.

For the past two months, my knee has been extreamly painful. I'm talking burning pain from inside.

Had an MRI done and the Dr. claims I have a sprained ACL and MCL. I'm not buying it! after two months, and from someone who has had more than their share of sprains, something else has to be going on.

Has anybody else had knee issues that were diagnosed as one thing, and turned out to be something totally different?

I have a follow up Wednesday with the Dr. but I know there is more than just a sprain going on.

He's a surgeon and I know there's nothing worth cuttable here but I am looking for suggestions to bring up to him.

Hey Dave this is Paul , talked to u last night. Does ur knee always hurt or 1 good day 1 bad 1? I got same bs , hurts on inner part but if I move it around it sometimes I can get it to feel better. Had surgery 2 years ago for torn meniscus but never got much better. Had a real good year with running 4 miles 3x a week and walking 3 to 4 times a week since April and lost 35 pounds but the last 3 weeks it hurts like **** to the point that I limp real bad. Dont know what to do either. The last 1.5 days its been good but will come back again Im sure

Hey Paul!
Mine is a constant pain. No good days just bad. Some worse than others. Their initial thought was a torn Meniscus. MRI ruled that out. Radiologist report said a sprained ACL and torn MCL. Ortho said no, just a sprain on both. Pain is too bad IMO for just sprains. Going for a follow up and then a second opinion. Hoping others have been in a similar situation and may have some insight to other problems to inquire about.

What you describe sounds like fluid build up on the knee....they can drain it and if that is what the problem is you will get immediate relief. It becomes very painful until the fluid is drawn off...not sure what causes it. It is not all that uncommon tho...and would expect the doc to figure that one.

I did not had any diagnosis issues but I DID have a torn ACL that I had surgery on. It felt like someone was constantly pulling on it, it was very painful. Good news is if you do have a tear my surgery helped 100%. Rehab took a while but it was all definately worth it. Sorry I wouldn't be able to tell you if a sprain was a painful as a tear. Good luck!

By the time you find a doctor to drain your knee it will pretty much all calcified before you get an appointment. Fluid is usually from the bersa sack below knee cap very common for carpet guys with the knee kickers, just ask Carter. Doesn't sound like what Dave has???? Fluid build up makes you look like you have 2 knee caps.

Don't have that symptom. Just hurts ALWAYS. Pain killers are a joke. It's going to be a long winter unless I find someone who can actually figure out what the F is wrong with my knee.

I have had every knee pain known to man kind. 1st ACL tear, MCL tear, major instability. If you have swelling, you no doubt have a tear, and they can drain the fluid and will give you reflief. BUT - the fluid draining hurts like m-f'er. The needle they use is HUGE! It is NOT something I would want to do again. Having die pumped in there to do the x-rays is bad too. But that was before MRI's. If you have fluid buildup, you no doubt have a tear of some sort, or a bad sprain. Time will heal it, but a ligament has no blood flow, so healing does not happen without surgery. If you tear your ACL, like I did, and don't have it fixed, it dissolves and disappears. I have pain from time to time, but mostly what I have now is a knee that pops out frequently. Over time, you get used to it. Go to a good orthopedic surgeon and have an MRI done. They will be able to tell everything from an MRI. Ice it and this will help keep the swelling down. Elevate the leg at night with a pillow. Get the knew above your heart. This is what they told me when mine was like a balloon prior to the fluid draining. Needless to say....I don't run any more pass patterns or 4.6 40's.

Thanks Fusion
I don't really have any swelling. Radiologist report calims sprained ACL and tear in the MCL. Went to one of the best Ortho's in the area and he claims just sprains on both. Having a hard time with that diagnosis. Will see him again on Wednesday and to beat the beat the truth out of him. I've already made plans for a second opinion but the ladder doesn't go much higher than him around here.

4.6 40's?? is that the Fusion, or you? :)

Thanks for everybody's input! Keep them coming. I plan to pummel him with questions on Wed.

Dave - you could have torn cartilidge as I did. Mine started out with torn cartlidge, and if that's the case it hurts most when you walk because that torn piece will catch on the bone between the joints. Some of these tears are hard to detect. Or you could have floating particles or something. MCL you won't need surgery, as that can heal on its own and a sprain is basically a partial tear. There's varying degrees of sprains depending on the percentage of tearing of the ligament. But bottom line is, all sprains are a tear of some sort. The good news is, if you have zero swelling, there no doubt is nothing catastophic going on with your knee. If you had significant damage, you would have major swelling. When I tore cartilidge and ACL there was a loud POP as a made the cut, my foot planted and my leg went another way. I knew immediately I was messed up. Next day my knee was huge.

Consider yourself lucky if you have a minimal sprain and no swelling. The pain will subside, but healing is slow with the knee ligaments. If you have no swelling, ask the doctor if he suggests using hot compresses. They say ice until swelling subsides, then switch to hot compresses. Verify with him.

Hey Wayne, will you let Dave use that cool bracelet you got at the snow show?
I think he bought 2 already???? I was on the fence for one, The magician was good at promoting his magic bands. Bought the Ginsu knives instead! lol If Daves Insurance is anything like mine, then they will take low bid for surgery. (that would be me) I have been dieing to use my sewing kit, turkey baster and Ginsu knives to (stop the whining) help my good buddy Dave B.

Judge Judy is tough.

Thanks you knuckle heads! Going back tomorrow. Will let you know what the "master" (not my term but another orthor's) has to say.

I think PR1 is bashing me and should be banned!

All we need is one of those famous bloody marys after each ride and Dave will be fine!

Amen to that Brotha!

Went to Dr.
He is stumped as to why I am in such pain based on the MRI results. Did the famous shot of Cortizone to see if that gives me any relief. If not, he's going in to find out what is going on in there. Yee Haaa!

My knee would burn like hedoubleQ when I had a slipped disk in my back
Bob

He said that may be part of the problem. I do have back issues but have a good chiropractor. I'm hoping that isn't it. Could also be from my ankle but he doesn't think so. Giving the Cortizone time to do it's thing and then go from there.
