LES in Green Bay

For those awake in the Green Bay area this morning, those flurries you saw falling around 5-6 am were lake effect snow. However, not from Lake MI, but rather Lake Superior! That is about as far south as I have ever seen LES fall in WI. I have seen bands from Lake MI make it into west central IN and east central OH.

I drove thru it on the way in today. It looked like Green Bay was all foggy as I was coming into town but it was snowing.

Not surprised, I have seen LES go all the way done pretty far into the Appalachian mountains. LES is such an amazing weather phenomenon.

BTW John, how much as fallen in the Keweenaw so far, I hate that the Radar doesn't pick up the snow over there and its hard to gauge from the visible satellite.

I am at 140.5" for the season so far.

You think you hate having no radar coverage for the western lake. Try to make a living doing it. I have clients that need the forecast before the sun even comes up and the visible satellite imagery is available. Talk about a shot-in-the dark forecast!

LOL John, I bet, I am surprised you dont have any more pull from the NWS and get them to put up a second Radar in the Keweenaw mountains :) :) I am pretty fortunate to be only a few miles away from the radar in Gaylord. But there is a huge gap between the NWS GRR and NWS APX so similar misfortune for many people along the Lake Michigan Shorelines between the radar sites. Its to bad there is not enough population in these black hole radar spots to justify installing additional radars. But then again the main issue is picking up LES as its so low in the atmosphere I suppose they still see normal rain / storm systems since they are much higher up. Either way it sucks for us LES enthusiasts and can only imagine being meteorologists in these areas.

I believe I have seen it go all the way to Kentucky before of Mich but could be wrong...John I always thought because the upper air speed played a role in this and the winds at the surface?
