Do area's like: St. Germain, Eagle River, Minocqua, Boulder Junction, Land O' Lakes etc...get much in the way of LES?

Does LES show up on Radar Maps?

The further you get up toward Land 'O the more you'll see...but it's nothing like the UP gets. Minocqua and Eagle River are just on the southern fringes of the belt. Typically don't see it show up on radar because it's so much lighter down this way. Currently we have no where near enough to sled in Minocqua. We'd need at least 4-6 just to get the trails open and it would be marginal even then. Keep doin' the snow dance...we're all ready to go, just need the dang snow!

We are getting some now in ER, just big flakes falling. We can see a dusting to maybe an 1" at a time and true the farther north like phelps and LOL the more you will see, can be up to 4 times more then we get around LOL

Under The Radar

Does LES show up on Radar Maps?

Sure NWS radars are capable because snow is snow. But most LES forms at very low altitudes. That and other variables such as radar location, distance, terrain and very localized LES events cause not all LES to show. Even the new NWS "Dual Polarization" radars wont help the old "line of sight " issue of - its gotta see it.

I could really see the difference in snowfall ast year between Phelps & Eagle River as winter wore on. Then the seasonal totals came in Eagle River 72 inches of snow & Phelps had 99 inches. 27 inches is a huge difference & those 1-3 of fluff LES do add up & helps trail conditions a lot. 17 miles North & a whole different ball game.
