Log splitter

So i got a new splitter, not really new but new to me, and i was going to change the hydraulic fluid . I am going to be using it mainly in the winter and read somewhere if you are going to use it in the cold you should use ATF. Anyone ever here of this or should i just stick to the hydro fluid.

I built 4 log splitters 10 yrs ago and yes do use atf, hydraulic oil is to thick for winter time use, my buddy has to warm his up first before he can get the motor to start when its cold, not mine, starts right up. You may also want to use 5w 30w oil in the motor for the winter time.

Ditto what toddspolaris said. You can also use ATF in your Eaton hydrostatic drive. Hydralic oil is about the same weight as 10w oil.

ATF is the way to go in a splitter, mine is over 20 years old and that is all that has ever been used in it, I don't think it has ever been changed and it still works great

atf for sure and close to 30 years in ours with never being changed.

Went to fleet farm Bought some atf. Thanks for the info. Now just got to find a new filter for it. Fleet no longer carries them.
