i saw this over on as other site. Is this true? If he can ride when he is 10 with supervision, are they saying he could ride at 12 without? Who would let there 12 year old ride trails by themselves? Thanks for any input.

Hello MSA,
I have a 10 yr old son, he is obviously not old enough to take a safety class yet but he wants to ride his own sled. Can he?

Hello,
Your son can ride his own sled on the trails as long as he is in direct supervision of a parent or guardian. He may not however cross a road, you will need to get off your sled cross his sled and then return to get your sled.
Ride Safe!

My parents. The answer is correct.
Scary stuff huh? Back in the day when I was 12 my sled cranked out 12.5 HP. Less then our riding lawn mower. I think with a shortage of 250 and 340 sleds for the kids that this law should be revisited.

So if i'm understanding the rules correctly a 7 year old can ride his 120 sled on the trails with adult supervision. As long as he does not cross a road. Not saying this is a good idea.

Requires safety certificate (training).

Pretty much same rules as dirt bikes. Under 12 on public trails, no road crossing (any road, not just county road, but 2 tracks as well) unless over 10. Must have safety training certificate.
ATVs are different, must be over 12 to be on public trails.

Sounds to me that you CANNOT get a safety certificate if you are less than 12, so if you're under 12, you can ride with adult supervision, but NOT cross a road.

Our 14 year old did her safety cert for Michigan on line! 25 bucks, very good information. 2 nights after home work.

Any idea on this same law in Wisconsin? Looks like you have to be over 12 and a snowmobile certificate?

I would let them take the course no matter what the age, its all information they need to know regardless of age. After all 25 bucks is a drop in the hat compared to what we all spend! You never know it might make the difference some day. Being proactive never hurts. just saying

We have 2 boys that are 9 & 10. They have raced go-carts since they were 5 years old. They drive 4 wheelers and dirt bikes everyday. We live on a farm in Indiana so they are not new to driving anything. We always teach them to drive with safety in mind. We want to take them on a trip to Wisc. over Christmas break and be law-abiding citizens. So what does Wisconsin law require for non resident children 9-10 years old?

Under age 12
No cert
A parent, guardian, or person 18 years old or older must accompany the child on the (same) snowmobile when operating on public areas.
No certificate or adult accompaniment is required for persons operating on* lands owned or leased by the operator’s parent or guardian.
* This does not include land leased by an organiztion of which the operator, operator’s parents or guardians are members

Thank God. A nine or ten year old riding a snowmobile is a scary thought, I don't care what else they've been operating.

Agree 100%. I don't know how it could be done, but there are definitely some areas that the minimum requirement should be a driver's license - quite a bit of the UP trails for example commonly see some speeds high enough I would hate to come across even a 12 yr old on, no matter what experience. Other areas are different of course, so I wouldn't want to see that everywhere. I was driving a bravo at 10 but in isolated fields not groomed 2 way high speed trails

My daughter took the safety class in IL. Does she have to take the class in Mich. or Wisc to ride the trails?
