Looking for input on Eastern U.P.

I know the western U.P. well, but I've never been east of L'Anse. We are looking to give the eastern U.P. a shot the week of Jan 14th. We typically prefer to stay in 2-3 bedroom cabins if possible vs hotels. Can I get any input on nice places to stay that are trail side with cabins? I was researching places in Autrain/Munising area. Being that I've never been to that area, I'm not familiar with the trails/ amount of snow/ good or bad routes or even best places to stay.

Anyone willing to give me some help?

The Munising area is great. I have spent a good amount of time between there and Paradise (great ride for a day trip). Look up hiawatha hideaway-they manage several rental homes in the area and were good people to deal with. She is a texter so go that route for the best communication link.

If you want to stay a lil more to the East, the Newberry area is a good central place to stay. As long as the snow is good to get thru town you can make good day long ride loops in all four directions and there is everything from lil mom & pop motels up to the big corporate hotels to choose from.

I think we have decided on Northwoods Resort. Can anyone give me any tips on where to go from there? New to the area, hoping to get a good first impression. Is basing out of this resort a good choice? Any good loops to take and try to stay in the lake effect?

Thanks.

I did a little searching for Munising trails on Facebook, and came across a bunch of negativity on the trail grooming for the Munising area. I thought that the issues there were resolved from what I was reading last year? Maybe not? Should I avoid the Munising area and go further east, or stay in western U.P.?

Arg. Wanted to try some place new, but don't want to get beat up either. Which was the main complaint, not lack of snow, lack of grooming.

That was a few years ago. Munising is a great place to ride now! It looks like they may be on the better side of this approaching storm also.

I can support what Bob said for a normal year. For this winter, the choices to ride are likely Munising or North of Mass City; that's it. With riders from all over the Midwest having only two choices, trail traffic will be out of control and no grooming team can handle it.
The problem with Munising is most/all side trails rely on the railroad grade which is shot by noon; coming back from Grand Marais, MI and points East to sleep in Munising/Wetmore late in the day and it is **** on earth.
Unless it gets cold and snows in WI etc. Munising will be a nightmare, just don't blame SORVA.

You’re exactly right !! The way its starting out this winter anywhere in the UP from East to West will be HIGH traffic until the end of Feb , or until everyone burns up their vacation time or Money , lol , so you’ll just need to suck it up and go ride or wait till March 1st if you want a trail with no bumps.....
