lost spark on my little gem

I have a 1977 el'tgre 4000 free air that i lost spark on,i was given a couple cdi box's from what make i don't know,but i do know they were ac's.I plug'd them in and still no spark(but will this even work if ther good cdi's ? )

wondering if there is a formality to narrowing down my proublem ?

any helpfull hint's would be great !

Not any kind of expert on those machines, but I know that all these early sleds had pulse coils that run a magnet by them to generate enough juice to create the spark, which gets directed by the boxes.

If those stop working, then the cdi boxes won't have what it takes to make spark.

Not unusual that those coils go bad over time...some far more frequently than others depending on who makes them and how much juice they have to generate.

I believe that a simple continuity test can determine whether or not the coil is good or bad. Coils are long strands of wire that should not have any breaks in them. If they have no continuity, they are probably shot and you need another one to create the pulses.

Thanks !..so are you saying that its a magneto ?..like points and stuff ?
I use to own a bike that i had points and a magneto on ?

Nope...coils mounted under a flywheel which has perminent magnets attached to it. Works good til one of the coils craps out....den no spark.

Solid state ignition needs power to work...power comes from the generators which is created by the flywheel swinging by the coils.

It all helps !...thanks !..I tried ask'n the Bride but all she did was throw me the JCPenny sale paper with a bunch of shiet higklited !..lol
