He's lucky is right. I have been in ice water like this for close to 3 hours only to pull yourself up a break through just as your almost complete out, and then have to do it all over again. It can be completely draining. Luckily for me it has been during fire dept. trainings and not so lucky for some people when I have been on call, and yes, obviously I was wearing a cold water rescue suit. My point is be careful on ice.
