Making a 120 go faster

I have a 2000 Arctic Cat z120. Should I buy the $6 metal spring kit on hi-performance engineering? Should I also increase the gearing? If so, to what size? Chain? I dont want to spend a ton of $, but $50-100 won't kill me. I also have a 2001 SKi Doo 120 i will need to do in a couple years for my little one. Thanks!

The little part to over ride the gov. is easy to make, dont waste the 6$. Just limit the spring a little bit, you may have to play with it to get it to where you want it. Gearing can help, but will adversly affect the bottom end take off, and put more strain on the clutch. Best bet, get an aftermarket clutch with one tooth larger sprocket, and run the stock rear sprocket and chain.

There is tons of tips on " recmotor.com ". Loosen the track, spray it down with veg oil, over ride the govenor zip tie the spring, pull out the air filter ( there is no dust in the winter) ect... I bought 1 of those honda motors, sled would go 30 mph pulling kids on saucers. 35 if clutched & geared for it. I used to go thru the clutches a couple a year, kids had a blast. All kinds of 120 " Go Fast " tips for free if I remember correctly. Handed off the 2 2000's I had to my buddy, he went to that site & got all his kids racing. I want to say the owners name is " scott " but it has been some time since I did that stuff. Recreational Motorsports is the name of the Company, out of Iowa ? I think. GOOD STUFF THERE.

I had a polaris 120 and changed the clutch, gears and put more boggie wheels under the skid all to make it perform better, it helped a little but I would just go with the governer bypass and run it. I wasted alot of money for nothing when it just needed a $6 part. The sprokets were alum and wore out all the time, plus you need more chains. its a pain in the arse. I think jus the bypass kit will add about 5 mile an hour.

My son raced Kitty Cats and XC 120's. There is a ton a stuff available to get these sled to go faster. Keep in mind that with every action there is a equal and opposite reaction. More speed results in less power. The single most important thing that will increase the speed is a result of reducing the friction. Fresh bearings, perfect ski alignment, metal track clips, fresh "Low Octane" fuel. These are low compression motors and the lower octane fuel will burn longer and hotter, the result is more power. Perfect valve settings. You can advance the timing by cutting a notch out of the key way. This list goes on and on. I haven't been involved with little kid racing for about 9 years but my guess is that the folks that are still involved have come up with a few other tricks as well. I'd recommend visiting this website for starters: www.kidsproice.org
