i made just over 100 gallons 2 years ago. 2009 was the best year we had since sometime in the early 1970's the old timers tell me. have enough syrup for our family and friends for a long time! i cooked using the old fashioned open pan method in the woods. tastes must better than if cooked using an evaporator IMHO.

A bunch of my cousins yoosta have a maple sugar operation in Bootjack (Lake Linden, MI) many decades ago — Bill Nara's sugar bush, I know exactly what you're going through, nothin' like the real thing!

Made in the UP

Here is a link to products made in the UP.
I personally liked the maple syrup from Strom Sugarbush. He is listed in the chart . He makes a " Light Amber " syrup that I thought was so outstanding that I had ordered several containers and sent them to my relatives all over the US ! From NY to Alabama. With the price of syrup getting out of hand , like everything else, I'm forced to buy my kids Mrs Butterworths and hide the maple for me.... No need to waste it on kids that don't appreciate it.

Well... my kids have no honor ! They will use the last of the Hellmans and put the empty jar back in the frig. They drink all the Ginger ale and leave the empty box back in the pantry. Then I have a wicked night time sweet tooth. I like to have some cookies or desert with a big glass of water in the evening, then I take my snacks and big glass of water and retire down to the man-cave II and watch TV on my 55 inch . It had gotten to the point that they would wipe me out of snacks. So... I started a special kitchen cabinet just for DAD. It is just one of those things.....

Silver Maples?

Anyone try using Silver Maples for syrup? I have two huge ones outside, and have thought about tapping those.

We do the exact same thing with our kids. I grew up making our own maple syrup and just can't handle the fake syrup.

Revman. you could tap those silver maples the only downside to silvers is that it will take more sap than a sugar to get a gallon of syrup as the sugar content of a silver is much lower.

That's what I've read. I think I'll give it a try. I guess I don't care how much I get...kind of like the saying...it's the journey, not the destination!

Just bought some real maple syrup from a guy around Hayward, WI. Made the boys some pancakes and used it...really good stuff! Even saw at one of the watering holes up there they were using it in a drink...think it was a sweet old fashion. Might have to give that a shot...no pun intended!
