Massive Downtown Calumet Fire

Big fire in downtown Calumet tonight. Took out nearly the entire city block across the street from Copper World and north of the old Ford (?) dealer. The Copper World folks were live-streaming the whole event. Looks like it started in the old white, wood-framed Evergreen building, and has slowly consumed everything to the north to the next cross street. They seem to be keeping it from moving south, so far. Sure looked like the limitations of fire apparatus volume in the area plus small town water capacity weren’t doing the firefighters any favors. Only so much they can do.

So damn sad.

Very sad to see. We love the "old" time downtown buildings, and the history that comes from them!

We will never forget the town of Calumet, late 90's, year of the big snow. Tunnels leading into homes, and stores as I remember. Pray for those who lost a large part of their lives last night.

Oh Jeez, this reminds me of my years at Michigan Tech (1958-1964).
In those years there were a number of "Massive Downtown Fires" in Hancock and Houghton as well, destroying full city blocks in some cases.

The opulent old (click →) Wikipedia: Kerredge Theatre[SUP]1[/SUP] in Hancock, built in response to the construction two years earlier of (click →) Wikipedia: The Calumet Theatre in Calumet was lost in such a blaze as well. (Both theaters were very reminiscent of the old Ford Theater in Washington DC, where President Lincoln was killed.)

Of course such massive fires always seemed to occur in the peak of Winter as well. You certainly have to respect the firefighters, most of which are volunteers, that deal with that. (My 2nd cousin William O. (Onni) Nara was with the Bootjack Fire Department after years as a Fire Captain with the Detroit FD. He could tell some stories!)

Believe it or not, I was hanging an all-nighter running through $80,000 in online blackjack play to qualify for the bonus. Non-stop 10 hour session until daybreak and then I still wasn't finished.

Where was it in relation to Rocky's? That's really too bad , sad when that old architecture is lost, hopefully no lives lost or injuries. you can always rebuild but never the same.

Okay doubting Thomas, I mean Tracker. Here is my trip report for my $80,000 venture which I wrote up for a few select individuals.

Oh, what a roller coaster ride! Here's my trip report for the Golden Nugget MI online casino's welcome bonus.

First the rules. In order to go for the $1,000 max bonus, you have to deposit $1,000 of your own money and you have to play with your own money before any of the bonus funds can be played with. The bonus plus your deposit times 10 and then times 4 if used on blackjack requires a play through of $80,000. There is a time limit of 30 days, but I did it in 3 days.

For me this promotion did not start off well. I lost and lost at the start. The game shows the dealer's last 10 hands and at one point the dealer had a value of 21 on 7 of his last 10 hands. I blew though my own deposit money of $1,000 and ended the first day with only the bonus funds available. I was only at the 15% mark required for the play-though. Oh, how depressing.

The second day also started off badly. Out of the $1,000 bonus funds available I went though around another $500 (my low point) and then said piss on it. I put two hands of $100 each out there and won both. At least it was a slight come back. I then took a break for dinner. After dinner I was going to take a nap but decided I would just play a few hands first. I started playing and everything just went my way so I decided to skip the nap. I won my double downs and slowly but surely I was inching my way back up. What was going to be only a brief session before my nap turned out to be an all-nighter with over 10 hours of straight blackjack play. As the sun was coming up I was completely exhausted and could not go on. I was at the 83% mark required for the play-though and was still slowly inching my way higher. I called it quits for the day at around the $2,300 mark which was an $1,800 come back.

At the start of the third day, I only had 17% to go to get the bonus. However, the luck was no longer with me. Again, I was losing and losing badly. Slowly but surely I lost $900 and qualified for the bonus at around the $1,400 mark with only a $400 net win. I really could have busted out of this promotion and lost everything so I consider myself lucky for doing as well as I did.

One final thing. I made many playing errors just because I wasn't watching what I was doing. All the errors occurred when I was playing two hands. I was playing fairly fast and it was because I wasn't paying attention to what hand I was on. I was hitting 20 when I was still on the first hand and thought I was on the second hand etc. Stupid on my part because I wasn't watching the hand indicator light close enough. It was very confusing because if you draw and hit 21 the hand automatically goes to the next hand, but if you hit 20 you have to give a stand signal. I must have lost at least $100 because of these stupid mistakes on my part.

So far I have played 3 "Welcome Bonuses" at MI online casinos. I have made money on all three with 2 of the 3 being above expected value. This one was below expected value by a couple hundred dollars. The best one by far I played is BetRivers because you only have to play the money through 1 time.
