Meals/Eating During your trip

I'm just wondering what most people do for meals during their trips. With the economy right now, I like to watch my money, and it seems like you can't find an inexpensive dinner anywhere in the Northwoods or UP anymore. My rich buddies would eat out every night but I'd rather cook some meals in the cottage. Most of the time we are riding at lunch time, so it's pub burgers and soup for that meal.

Does anyone have some ideas for good, simple meals back at the cabin? Or, how do you guys handle your meals?

We stay at a cabin every time. Someone is is alway in charge of a meal. Some do breakfest and some do dinners. Go out for lunch. It nice to come back from a great day of riding then sit back and have a few drinks and a good dinner. It helps the coin purse.

The Group I ride with prefers to eat at the house we rent for each trip not so much for the cost savings but because it is just more fun. We are very simple Egg McMuffin Toaster to make breakfast sandwitches with Juice and Coffee. Lunch on the trail. Then we always bring up pre made ready to bake dinners like Lasagna,Tater Tot Hotdish,Sloppy Joes, Good frozen pizzas & Hamburgers (bring my George Foreman Grill), with a side to go with it. Never fancy just good. All food is brought up in throw away containers so thier is no clean up. Whatever I spend we just split.

Two words: Crock-Pot. Many recipes out there (online) that are easy to prepare. Throw the ingredients in before you leave the cabin in the morning...let it do it's thing while you're on the trail all day. Come back to a warm, home-cooked meal. Nothing beats the smell of a fresh, hot meal at the end of the day when you're beat-tired and ready to eat.

Ditto what skiwatab said. It's always easier (and faster) to do as much prep work at home as you can. Not to mention, you never know what kind of utensils a particular cabin may (or may not) have, unless you've been there before.

Lots of casserole type stuff, lasagna, even pasties....the crock pot and George Foreman grill are great ideas, too.

Cooked New York Strip Steaks in the Muffpot last weekend.

2 weeks ago we cooked shrimp scampi in it.

Meals on Wheels

I like to pre-cook and make the mess at home and clean up there. Then just heat up. Less down time this way.Tommorow (Tue) I'm cooking crock pot stew, waffles, b'fast sausage, chili and choc chip cookies for my part of a 5 day wk-end.

Well we stay at Sunrise Lodge http://www.sunriselodge.com so we eat B-Fast there but bring quite a bit up for chowing down the rest of the time. I am sitting in the cabin as I type and here is the SHORT list of dishes that were brought up this year: Portillo's Beef (from the Chicago area), pulled pork 3 tray's, Meat Balls 2 tray's, chicken fingers 2 trays, burgers case of 24, lasagna enough to feed 15 twice, everything home made.
And of course pop, beer, water, chips, dip's and the every some yummy German Chocolate cake also from Portillo's there are lot's of other little goodies as well but as you can see we eat better up here then back home..lol.

We useually precook a pan of Lasagna (always better rewarmed) and take a crock pot (for those nights we don't know how late we will be) and a Ronco...I love that thing. Set it and forget it baby!!!!!

Just take a Wife to do all the cooking. We eat hot breakfast at the cabin every morning, eggs, pancakes, french toast, breakfast caserole. Warm tummy and your ready to ride all day. Crock pot beef roast for dinner, and other homemade things. Real cuts down on the cost of things. When we stayed at hotels, I always hated to get all suited up, head down the trail 10 minutes and stop for breakfast.

We precook most of the meals and just reheat. Money gets tight. We also bring a grill in the trailer and will grill in the hotel parking lots - chicken, ribs, steaks. Works out great - snowmobiling tailgating!

We stay for $25 per person a night so it helps with the food situation. Rather than spending $100 a night for some places it balances out. We make breakfast before we go (Eggs, bacon, muffins, etc.) and load up good; we can go till about 2:00. Then we just bring snacks to tie over till dinner then go out for a nice dinner. Pretty much one meal bought for the day. Breakfast is the easiest and quickest meal to prepare.

Also, I'm not a drinker so if you look at the price of a beer on average ($3) and had (2); you could probably have a burger and fries instead.

Package Trips

We always make a trip over superbowl weekend, the FAST FOOL's are at home getting all drunked up and the trails are nice and empty. We rent a large house in the UP take the wifes and grilfriends (5-6 couples) and only spend $500 a couple. That's all the food for a week, lodging, and a great superbowl party with food that is nothing but first class. Coming from chicago we have some of the best markets around so why eat second best food in a bar. Nothing against the bars, we stop for some snack stuff and a beer. If you think Portillo"s has great beef, try Ronnoco beef (Bedford Park) price and quality can't be beat. Other then that find out were (Boatssleds) is staying sounds like they have it going on! HAPPY TRAILS!

Our group has been "eating in" for about 10 years now. We do it to keep costs down and it is nice just to get back to the cabin or apartment and just sit back and relax (in our pj's) with a nice hot homemade meal. We then let the spirits flow, maybe watch a movie, play cards or drinking games in the comfort of home. Eating breakfast in keeps the group moving on time...otherwise there are the straglers.

For many years I did all the cooking(pre-made at home) and everyone chipped in for the food but this year each person is making a meal.

We eat breakfast in which is egg bake one morning, french toast with protein another, cinnamon rolls and/or pancakes with a protein another morning. The last morning is left overs. For lunch we either roast weiners in the bush or eat out. I always carry a snack with me for the muff pot and share a warm snack with my buddies. For supper we may go out 1 night but every other night we eat in. We may have chili one night, beef stew another and sloppy joes another. All great food after a long day in the bush.

We try to stay somewhere there is a full kitchen(The Bluff or Krupp's) and it just feels more like home.
