measuring snow

I live near the twin cities and they get the snow total from the airport. I was wondering how they get the amount with the airport being open. I live where the wind blows a lot and was wondering what would be the best thing I could do to measure snow. Thanks in advance and love the site.

I really could not tell you for sure, other than there are probably places that are somewhat sheltered out there and that is where they would take it from.
