This reminds me of my early sailing days on Lake St. Clair. Doin an over-nighter (all nite race) in a smaller blow boat, all you could see was some tiny stern lights and some reds and greens bobbing up and down in the very light winds.
All of a sudden this meteor streaked across the sky and lite the area just like high noon. It only lasted a second or so, but it was soon bright you could see every boat and sail numbers which was helpful to know how we were doing in the race.
A couple seconds after it passed, everyone was a bit appalled by it and my Dad and skipper chimed in and said, "Man, now that was a really good flare gun, who ever shot that one off....we got to get some of those!" Course we all agreed that it was the best flare gun anyone had ever seen and we definitely needed to look into that one.
A few seconds later the radio station we were listening to, broke in and began talking about a meteor which streaked across southern Ontario and southern Michigan, which was seen as far away as New York, and as far west as Edmonton.
We all laughed...and got back to sneaking along in the dark.
