This may be a dumb question, but why does the "meteorological" season always differ from the "calendar" season? I.E today is the first day of "meteorological" spring but the calendar doesnt show the first day till March 20th.

It's because the printers making the calendars and the mindless media call the equinoxes and solstices the "first day of..." and fail to call it what it is and also fail to match up more correctly with the weather that is happening in each season.

The meteorological seasons do not match up perfectly well everywhere, but for most places, they match up much better than using the astronomical happenings. For most areas, June 3rd is way more like summer than spring, yet, go by the calendar or media and it is still spring. Same thing for Dec 3rd. Much more like winter than summer.

Plus, why should the "first day of summer" in the northern hemisphere come when the sun is already starting to dip lower on the horizon? Does not make sense to me.

Just my 2 cents.
