MI Trail Permit Status

I remember part of the reason for increasing the cost of the MI trail permit to $45 was to purchase trail easements. Have any easements been purchased since the permit increase? Will there ever be a marked trail from Houghton to Chassell again? Just asking for a status.

As a side note...I bought a trail permit and have not rode a single mile here in Mi. this year.

Nobody knows what MSA does? I think they are down to 1200 members. The chassell trail is a big legal battle that's been going on for years. They need to keep the trails they already have maintained,no need for new ones.

Not to high jack this thread, but MSA was brought up. For those that don't do FB,get ready to laugh your butt off. They want to make hand signals on the trail a law. Let's just say..... They are a bit out of touch when it comes to snowmobiling.

I disagree. There are many small towns that could benefit from a trail system coming in to them. The clubs need members that want to help out. There is another thread that states clubs need members to help out.

I am on FB and a friend of MSA. Never heard or can find this topic of hand signals. Please provide proof.

Hate to be the devils advocate ... If the small town wants a cross connect trail put in,then put one in. Let the town vote on it. Snowmobiling is a big money grab. We will go to were there is snow and welcome . We all have trucks and trailers. No disrespect to the volunteers. How many people sledding in the UP this year? Who's riding MN or WI? All three have great trails supported by volunteers. Only one has snow. Where are all the sledders at?PR1, posted by MSA on Jan 19 2015 at 10:08 am, 128 comments. I admit I skimmed through the FB MSA posts somewhat quickly (looking only for comments that were posted by MSA) but I did not see anywhere that indicated they were looking to legislate hand signals.

If they said it, I couldn't find it/didn't see it. That's all I'm saying. But I will be among plenty of MSA officials this weekend so I will certainly ask because if that's something they intend to push for, I will definitely voice my opposition.

Is this what you are referring to?

I can't find the MSA advocating for any changes to the law. All I see is the MSA seeking peoples opinions on the topic. In fact, one of MSA's own comments in the thread states: "Hand signals are not written in the snowmobile law it is simply a coutesy [sic]."

Where is the proof, exactly?

The Michigan Snowmobile Association is continually working with the Snow Country Trails Conservancy (SCTC) to acquire permanent easements or lands for snowmobile trails. The only thing stopping us is the almighty $. Right now the DNR is putting the final touches on the procedure for SCTC to secure the money in the form of a grant to purchase some easements. Unfortunately there is not as much money in the fund that we thought we would have by this time. The recession really knocked the wind out of the number of registered snowmobiles in the state, losing almost 1,000,000 registrations in the last five years. The list is long of important pieces to purchase, so that aspect is also being sorted out.

Good info. How much of the decline is the recession vs the increase in permit pricing a few years back?

IMO, I would tend to think the recession would be the main culprit. Most people accept the fact that costs of liscening etc. For sports increase. Most people can afford permit increase fees. Whereas with financial impacts, such as the recession. Toys are the things that go when you have to feed your family, and keep a roof over their head. Michigan is a pretty highly impacted area in this most recent downturn in the economy.
