The Multi-Use MiDNR Designated ORV Trails are open year round, but remember any and all ruts done by ATV's has to be repaired by VOLUNTEERS.
Mi-TRALE asks ORV Riders to please wait till the MiDNR Designated ORV Trails can be ridden on without damaging the very same trails that are also used by other forms of recreation.
As far as the trails on the Ottawa N.F. THEY CANNOT BE RIDDEN on till at least May 15th, and that depends upon the condition the trails are in.
ALL of the LOCAL Non-Mi DNR Designated ORV Trails within the 5 Western UP Mi-TRALE ORV Trail System are NOT open till at least May 15th.
What other ORV Groups do in other parts of the UP and what the Hiawatha N.F. does is unknown to me.

qber. The question was when does the atv trailes in Michigan open. STATE trailes are open all year. There was a thread about riding on a ATV/ snowmobile trail. Just to let you know. If a STATE atv trail uses all or part of a STATE snowmobile trail it can use the trail in the winter. I did not say it was smart. But that is the law.

Jay I get your point. I use these snowmobile/atv trails alot for ATV riding in non snowmobile season. I did see see an ATV once on a snowmobile trail on a January night between Bergland and White Pine. That was about 10 years ago. The guy was pretty much all over the place, and just a little out of control. At the time it was a surprise and kind of humerous, though I wouldn't have wanted to meet him coming around a curve or over a hill. I've never thought of using my ATV during snowmobile season - they don't handle well enough on the packed trails to not be a danger to snowmobilers. This time of year the snowmobiles are pretty much down for the season, but parts of those snowmobile trails that are not designated ATV will still be open and that could be problem for snowmobile clubs if the atv's got on them before they are closed. We have some snowmobilers as well as ATV riders that don't seem to have enough respect for private property and they can be a problem for the areas that are acquired by the snowmobile clubs. Every rider should try to be a member of an ATV or Snowmobile club to help with the trail work- keeps everyone responsible and helps preserve the trail systems. I'm sure guys like Skip appreciate the help.

We're going to a new Membership due program. In place of the 'anniversary' date program that we have used since Mi-TRALE was formed, we are going to go to an annual Membership drive where everyone renews or joins at the same time.
This is going to be from June 1st to May 31st each year. I really hope you will renew as Mi-TRALE desparately needs membership dues to keep our 5 county inter-connecting trail system in tact.
The little money Mi-TRALE gets only comes from brushing and signing the BN, SB, and IRM Trail. Those few dollars requires that we do this trail work before May 31st and after Labor Day. While Mi-TRALE maintains hundreds of miles of ORV Trails in 5 counties throughout the spring, summer, and fall, we only get paid for a few trails and only twice a year.
Thus we have set May 15th and 16th as the Spring Trail Workbee on the BN, SB, and IRM Trails. We could sure use you and anyone elses help on just one section of anyone of those trails. Those trails are way too long for anyone person to do the whole trail.
If you could help that would be great! Just go to our Mi-TRALE website at www.mi-trale.org Then go to contacts and click on my name. Then let me know what section of what trail you could help us on. I will make sure you get the ORV Signs and Confidence Markers you need, and sign posts. We only have one Power Auger so I am going to try to move that Power Auger around. We also only have one chainsaw, so I will work on moving that chainsaw along.
If we can maintain or hopefully increase our membership, it would be great if we could purchase another power auger and chainsaw for the different regions in our 5 county area.
Thanks again...it really helps the moral of our club to read about people that want to help maintain our trails.

Went to the MiTrale site and tied to email you but it didn't work - probably just this computer. I''l try at home. The trail work is fun and another excuse to get out on the ATV.
I have a chainsaw and post hole digger (no auger though) and I'll bring them and some other tools. Did signing and brushing on the Houghton to Twin Lake section 2 years ago with Dave and Lori (Wildlife). Some of the post holes were a little rough in some rocky areas, but Dave had a long steel bar that worked real well for getting the post holes dug in those spots. Look forward to riding with you again.

I'll work on getting another crew to go from Twin Lakes to Greenland to finish the BN Trail.
It looks like I will be taking the IRM from Watersmeet to Iron River. I have a Board Member to go from Watersmeet to Marenesco on the IRM.
We have a Mi-TRALE Board Meeting (that is open to EVERYONE) on April 12th at Twilleys in Bruce Crossing. At that meeting I will work on getting a crew for the SB Trail from Sidnaw to Bruce Crossing, another crew to go from Bruce Crossing to Bergland.
Then the club will have to work on the hundreds of miles of Non MiDNRE ORV Designated Trails that Mi-TRALE has.
