Michigan out of State Trail Pass and Home State registration.

I live in Illinois, I keep my sled at the cabin in the U.P. Sled has WI reg. with a MI trail permit. Why? If I can I try not to give any money to the state of IL. Plus If I ever want to drive the sled south to WI, I don't need a trail permit.

I purchased a new sled this season from a dealer near my cabin in the UP. My primary residence is in Wisconsin. The sled has a MI registration as well as the MI trail permit. I don't register it in WI. I don't profess to be an expert on this subject but I'm assuming I'm ok. .....

Even though I lived in central OH when I started riding (mid-90's) I never had any of my sleds registered anywhere but MI. I don't know the law in WI but MI did not care so long as the sled(s) had both registration & trail permit. That was true even when I hauled them back and forth because I never had the urge to ride one in OH..........well, maybe one little spin around our neighborhood after an especially heavy snow..........;)

If you are riding and or store it in the state your domicle without a registration from that state you will get a nice ticket... At least for legals in IL/ WI...

I learned the hard way about registration....

My second time in MI 4 years back, my wife and I thought we would enjoy our Christmas sledding for a couple of days. We were just across the road on #3, turning back to Krupps on our last 1/4 mile of a two day trip and our DNR favorites stopped us before we crossed the road. My wife's sled was out of MN registration from the year before, so our DNR buddies wrote us a ticket for no out of state registration for $130 and told us to have a Merry Christmas! It was their last ticket of the day to meet their quota, as they went back to their station....

Know your laws of the state you are going to, otherwise, you will get a nice "Christmas Gift" too..
