After last years scorching heat here in Indiana we have had a very mild summer with only 2 days over 90 degrees. Its been a very comfortable summer and the old timers are saying this is what Indiana summers were like back in the 40's 50's etc... Any reason for the cool summer? Is this pattern look to stay around and any idea how it will affect this winter?

It feels like late September here in Hayward,WI...highs in the low 70s, morning temps in the low 40s...last weekend it never got about 55 degrees. We had one week that was hot and that has been it.

The reason for the cool summer thus far is because the jetsream has been out of the NW for much of the period, which brings air in out of the NW, which is cooler and less humid than is typical.

As for why this, or any, pattern stays stuck in the same general setup for an extended period of time, we just do not know. Nor do we know why the pattern then moves on to the next setup.

I would have to question the idea of the summers of the 40's and 50's always being like this. I would not be surprised if a few were, but not the majority.
