I got a new garage shop built, 30x45, so I need the fill it with stuff. Thinking about a millermatic 211 with aluminum spool gun. Anybody have any experience or opinions on these? Give me the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Thanks

I have one and love it. It replaced a 180 I had previously. Being able to run either 115 or 230 is really nice. It's home garage has changed a couple times and it always took me a couple months to get 230 set up so being able to plug it into a normal wall socket temporarly was nice. Getting the tension on the feed wheels/wire spool took some time and I ended up with a couple birds nests. But I think that is something your going to deal with on any wire feed. I know Miller/hobart uses the exact same design on all wire feeders, I Lincoln's design is very simlar.

What are you looking to do with it? I have all Miller equipment, but I have the XMT and Dynasty's with seperate feeders for steel and aluminum.

Just general hobbyist stuff. Not everyday building, just general repairs and maybe making stuff every so often. Doubtful that Id have to weld anything very thick, probably less than 3/8-1/2. Aluminum would probably be fairly rare, but I'm sure it would happen, especially having motorized toys.

if you are just going to do small repairs get the Eastwood 175 same as a miller and a lot cheaper. Comes with spool gun also or just buy a tig and be done with it! Advance welding supply in milwaukee sells them for $475, this ****s on my buddys Lincoln welder the quality is much better than the Lincoln.

I have a Millermatic 200. It is an older model but I think any idiot can use the thing and get a nice weld out of it.
Having the 220 is def the way to go. Crazy that newer one (as some mentioned in this thread) can go 110 or 220.
I have used smaller 110 welders and its nothing like the big dog.

Since I have had the welder, I have become the go to garage for friends plows, trucks, toys. Cant believe I ever lived with out a welder.
Never will again. If your in the area and in a jam, look me up.

Have not tried aluminum yet. Friend has a gun I can borrow that plugs right in. Have a pontoon boat project this spring where I am going to give it a try.

I have the Miller 211 and love it. I replaced a Lincoln 140 ProMig (a great little welder also) with the 211 for the dual voltage capability.

I've built a '69 Mustang and a '38 hotrod that have had a combination of body and frame work (boxing), and also some trailer repair. The 211 will handle about everything you would want to do in a home shop. Anything bigger than jobs like this and I will just use my old Lincoln Tombstone AC/DC

I did not buy the aluminum spool gun, but may get one. I've heard the spool gun conversions for the migs do not work quite as well as everyone thinks.. not sure on the truth of this, but may look into it further.
