MN North Shore Riding Suggestions

Hi,

We have never ridden the North Shore area before and are wondering if anyone has suggestions on where to stay? Where to ride?

Specifically we'd like to ride 3 days (100 or so miles, getting older). We'd prefer not to have to backtrack over the same trails every day. I have looked at the Trout Lake Resort, but haven't found a lot of information on it.

There will be 3 of us, and we prefer a cabin, and ideally there'd be a lodge near by with eats and drinks.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Boy, this is going to be a tough one. Normally I could give you a million spots to ride as we ride that area almost every weekend.

When do you think you'll be going up there? The reason I say it could be a tough one is because they've been trying to get trails cleared up there due to the first heavy snowfall that took down a lot of trees. I do believe that at this point everything has been cleared and groomed but if not I'm sure it will be soon. Its a incredible area to ride when its all cleared and groomed. There's a lot of lodges up the GunFlint trail that would fit your needs but you might ride that area out in a couple of days. If you were to stay in the Tofte area you could run up the north shore and ride the gunflint area trails for a day, then head south down the state trail and ride in the Finland area for a day and the final day you could run up the tomahawk towards Isabella and back down the Yukon to the stae trail. So there'd be some back tracking each day but you'd be riding back and forth on the North shore State trail which is phenomonal. You cold also head straight north of Tofte and ride forest roads for a day. Places near here would be Crooked lake resort, Superior Ridge, Bluefin Bay, Tofte Americinn

Or you could stay down in the Finland area and head up the shore one day, head down the shore another day to Gooseberry Falls, and still do the tomakawk/Yukon loop.Places to stay here would be Crooked lake, Wildhurst, Americinn in Silver Bay, Camp 61 in Beaver Bay.

Lots of places to stay. let me know if you need anymore information.

Tomahawk Yukon loop would be a tough go right now. I am not sure how far the Igloos have been able to groom the Tomahawk, I know it is groomed from the NSST to Crooked Lake maybe to Isabella by now but not sure. I know that the Yukon is only groomed from Dixie/NSST up to the Spur trail over towards Gooseberry. Above that point it is wet and not frozen enough to cross the lakes and swamps. Hoping next week to take 2 Tuckers north on the Yukon to Isabella with out drags. Forrest at Hungryjack lodge has a good idea of what the Gunflint trails are like, try contacting him.
