John, you and other weathermen always talk about the models, U.S., European, etc. You've probably answered this before but who are these guys and where are they located [city/country]. BTW, just signed up and like your new video forcasts. Tks, Rev

Hi Rev.

The models are all produced by government agencies. The NWS in the US, Environment Canada, Japan Meteorological Agency and the European Center for Medium Range Weather Forecasting. They are located all over the world. Most of the US stuff is done from the Washington D.C. area.

I saw a report that NOAA had made the transition to their newest generation of weather satellites in January of this year. Is that driving the "catch up" by the GFS?

Yes, it would have been part of what is causing the GFS to catch up to the European. The new satellites can "see" way more than just clouds and much of that data is used by the models. However, I suspect that most of the improvements have come due to changes in the way the models compute the data that are put into them.

Great Question!
