I moved up to Ironwood in 2010 so this is my 7th summer and I can tell you that the work is coming back to the Western UP/N Wi. and skilled tradesman, truck drivers and nurses and in big demand. Every week I see the same adds looking for CDL holders, nurses and many more such as production workers..... This is my 5th summer working for a local concrete/masonry contractor and my boss ran an add and he cannot find a good skilled concrete finisher. All of the big company's (Routsala,Lupino,Big Snow Country Contractors) around Ironwood are looking for the same but few are available....... Granted the pay is not the best but not too bad either, i'm only 5 bucks behind my friend Chris who is a non union carpenter in N. Illinois/S. Wisconsin. He's at $25 an hour. (So basically tradesmen can make about $20 or more an hour) And with OT your checks around a grand or more a week)....... And the homes are a small fraction of the cost down south and the life is pretty nice especially when you dont have to pray for a foot of snow like I had to in Fox Lake Il. lol...... I was going to take a pic of the Big Snow Country Contractors sign out front of there building that says EVERY year..."Now accepting applications for all positions"..... A million dollar edition is going on right now at our local hospital. Local paper has adds right now for carpenters and more....... And the winters are unreal as you know the worst year I've had was 170 inches. My friend Jeff A. from McHenry Il. just caught a person rifling through his vehicle last night and says he cant wait to sell the place and move up north! He and his wife are looking for a small cabin/guide business to start if any John D'rs know of any. Hope this inspires you to make the move and really enjoy where you live.

How many months can you actually work up there before having to go on unemployment for the season and that pays how much? What kind of retirement plan do they offer up there?

Thanks on possibility of him owing Kruppy, i'll pass that along to him. Benefits?.......Well it all depends where you work. There's wide variety of jobs of course your line cooks wait staff, ski hill workers, lawn care company's probably do not have benefits. The better corporations do. Your work year also depends on where you work. Construction you may be off the first big storm in the first week of November like i was 2 years ago but that was the only year it started that early. I do masonry and we had an inside job last winter until January and couple winters before we put up a shelter to roll right through sub zero temps at a bank in Hurley Wi. So it all depends. But if construction slows down there are others that open up. We do plowing and roof shoveling in the winter if you want to if not your off for the winter to play in the snow! Unemployment is not much, about 360 is what I get. Also all four of the local ski resorts hire all positions to run the hill and restaurant's. Musicians you can make good money and having a blast playing live music at the local ski hills and Hurley bars. http://www.yourdailyglobe.com/home/cms_data/dfault/pdfs/classifieds/2016-08-26.pdf
