Has anyone made this ride before? If so any idea about how long of a ride it is. We were thinking about trying it next weekend.

It depends on what kind of shape the trails are in !....I would say with smooth runnings every bit of 8hrs at a decent not out of control pace, and thats taking in a few breaks and a lunch without alot of thumb juice..did that trip a few years ago with 5 of us and we don't ride that aggressive with the guy's we were with..you should try too stop at some of the outlooks and other stuff too see along this trip-break it up with a stay over along the way,Big Bay would be a nice town for ya too shoot up to and spend the nite,if you have never been there it won't disappoint you,nor will the trails up there..In Marquette behind the AC dealer there was a brand new trail that led you up that way to Big Bay.
VERY important I think in L'anse the trail might be shut down,so if the ice conditions are rite you could jump on the bay from the boat launch to get over to Baraga trail system then from there again with the same good ice conditions you could get the trail thats shut down(4 get the trl #) this is the one that goes to Chassel,if you could take the patience to hit this trail you would save yourself about 3 hours,it puts you on the bay at then its with smooth ice only a 15 minute ride at a wide open pace to Houghton....Im sure there will be more feed back for ya here as everyone has been very clear about other people's need's..Have Fun !

I have done it twice. The trail out of Houghton to Baraga was closed so we took the long way around and its about 220 miles a direction.

Well I am going up there also to ride from X-Mass to Ishpeming, we take our time, stop in Gwinn, Republic, then hit Ishpeming. This takes us 8 HRS average speed 60 MPH. I also ride from Ishpeming to Houghton that takes about 10 hrs, that's taking the long way not chessel & water. Have a safe trip.

Last year we rode from Christmas to Copper Harbor in a day, via Gwinn, Republic, Twin Lakes, etc. We did not ride the trail from Barga North, we came across the southern route. We were atop Broakway Mtn as the sun was starting to set, it was a long day - I think the mileage was roughly 370. Not a bad day at all, just a long day.

Houghton to Munising

We rode from Houghton to Munising at the end of Febuary last year when the trails where deteriorating fast, last ride of the year. We left Houghton at 8AM and took the south route down around Baraga (was told trails where bare for miles in and out of Baraga) to Big Bay for a late lunch. Then from Big Bay to Munising and only stopped once and did not get to Munising until 9PM. I am sure it could be done faster but many of the roads where bare rock so we had to take ditches and what ever else resembled snow/snirt. 307 miles for the day of which half where on poor or no snow. We look forward to another long trip but this time we hope to have snow covered trails.
Good Luck and have fun.

you can easily make it from Munising to Gwinn to Big Bay to Marquette then along the railroad grade to back to Munsing. We do this every trip. We always stop for lunch in Big Bay and stop at Lakenland to look at what he has made, then usually end up at Bear Trap for Dinner

Backpacking this weekend

Starting out in Gwinn and heading to Copper Harbor on a backpack trip. Is that 370 mile trip a round trip or one direction?
