Munising area 1st Timer

Headed up this weekend for the final trip of the year. Have always stayed in the Bergland area. Decided to try staying in Munising, Cherrywood Lodge, (didn't realize it is actually shorter drive from Chicago). I'm looking for suggestions for things to do (scenery, restaurants, cool bars, kick a** trails, trails or areas to avoid, etc......) in the area. My riding cohort and I put on a decent amount of miles each trip so we are open to traveling in all directions. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I haven't been up there in a few years but my favorite bar/restaurant was always Foggy's. It's just down the road to the west of Munising.

I always stay at the comfort inn up that way. Great place trails and gas right there. Lakenland?? big spring boat, pitcure rock, and eben ice caves are a few great places to see. Plenty of restaurants to eat at. Afterhours bus service to bring you to town if you shouldnt be driving. Casino near by. Plenty of trails all directions.

We have been going to Munising since 1982.
You can go a different direction each day.
When you get there grab a map, easy to read.
Nice loop is Munising to Shingleton, Grand Marais, Seney and back to Munising.
Between GM and Seney is a Hot Dog stand, stop in and have one.
Good places to eat downtown and also stop at the Beartrap just north of Shingleton.

Been to Munising 3 times so far this year, and headed back this weekend to stay at the Cherrywood also. I recommend heading west one day for a loop through Au Train, to Marquette (stop at Lakenenland of course) then down to Gwinn, through Chattem and Eben Junction and back is about 140 miles. Extend it a bit and head through republic, and Ispheming after Marquette to make it more like 200 miles . 1 section of this is railroad grade, and one a long stretch of power lines, but there is some good twistys in there as well. Foggys in Christmas is a great bar and excellent food once you get back from your ride. Or if you want a dinner stop on the trail, check out UpNorth Lodge in Arnold.

The routes to the east with Grand Marais, Shingleton, Seney, etc are another good days ride as well. For a good bar about 15 miles away by trail check out boot lake. Or an additional 10 miles and hit the Jack Pine. Be sure to check out Kawliga in the basement if you make it to Jack Pine ;)

Send me a PM if you have any specific questions or want more details. Have fun!

+1 on Camel Riders. It gets crowded but worth it. Sign on trail 7 before it hits 413. Great riding on the "8s" east of Shingleton heading towards Grand Marais. Enjoy.

Was up there all last week. Cherrywood has reasonable food and a bar onsite for the end of the day. The owner loves snowmobilers and he also owns the Dogpatch restaurant in town. Foggy's is always a good food choice in Christmas and a nice short "shakedown" drive from Cherrywood once you arrive.

I personally like the food at Redz Wolf Inn out towards Newberry.

The only section we ran into that was bad all week was Trail 8 east out from the Bear Trap curve. Those of us on newer sleds could handle the mogals.

Everything east of Munising is sitting on 2-4' of snow and the trails were great. Run the crazy 8's. Go to Redz from Cherrywood and it will be a sweet ride and works out to about 160-180 miles round trip. You can always run through Grand Marais and head to Paridise and see the forest that burned down last summer. See the Tahquamenon Falls outside of Newberry.

We got down to Big Springs with no problems and floated the raft accross the lake. Swing over to Seney and stop at Seney Clause hot dog stand.

You have got to go to Big Bay. Going along the Lake was no problem since they got 31" of snow the other week. Stop at Lakenland along the shore. Take the 310 trail out of Marquette instead of 5 through Ishpeming. The Big Bay club has done a fantastic job on the trail and it makes for a much faster trip now. Along the road there are ice falls you can take a couple of photos.

Enjoy.

Its funny every one seems to east or west. Go South man. The trails are in great shape and much less traveled. Trail 8 has a ton of traffic.
Camel Riders is by far the best food around. Reservations are required for dinner.
