Todays post from www.algersorva.com

Holding them back!
We need snow!!!!!!!!!
No new white stuff this morning. Heaviest of the snow is still on the Northeast section of our trails , Miners Castle and Shingleton areas. Yesterday Operator Kris went out and packed Trail 422 south of H-58 with the Deere and 3-point Dubie Groomer. In the pictures you can see the base is thin in most areas. Trails from Au Train West are still very thin. Our base is freezing in good but with no new snow we will only be spot grooming to freeze wet areas in. No regular grooming yet. Today we will be working Trail 8 North of the Tanglewood so ride with caution in that area.
Today’s forecast is for a sunny 29 degrees, 5 to 15 mph W winds.
Still – If you must venture out please ride conservatively and not dig holes when you you accelerate. A hard flat trail base makes for a great season of grooming and riding.
Keep Snow Dancing and we will continue to do what we can in preparation. Stay tuned for updates!
(Today’s photos are from Operator Kris and his Trail 422 and Trail 8 run from Shingleton yesterday.)

Water Hazards - Some wet areas have not frozen deep yet. Ride with caution.

12/24/18 Report

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Good news shown in our pictures, Munising received a measured 2 5/8 inches of fresh snow this morning. It’s not a lot but we are heading in the right direction.
The core of our system from Trail 8/ M-94 in Shingleton to Trail 7 / Buckhorn and North, Trail 7 to Christmas, and most of Trail 419W from Munising to Christmas is in Fair Condition. Beyond that overall riding conditions are poor with some thin, sandy, rocky and wet areas. No grooming equipment operation scheduled at this time but we will be out building a base in certain areas.

Forecast is for scattered snow showers, 31 degrees and 10 mph NW winds. It still looks promising later in the week but no snowfall amounts forecast yet.

Trail Work Activity: For now we have just been working areas that still need a good flat base established. Yesterday operator Keith took the John Deere and Dubie 3-point Groomer out for minor brushing, tree clearing and water management trail shaping. From Munising to Christmas, all but the two mile Frog Hollow section of Trail 419W was “panned, including the new Holiday Inn Spur. We needed to run all the new, and recently reconstructed, sections of Trail 419W to be sure the grooming equipment can pass through properly when the snow really arrives.

If you must venture out please ride with caution and conservatively and PLEASE be respectful, stay on the trail and off the throttle when in the towns.

I was there this past week. Wed afternoon -Sunday AM and we did 600 great miles. There were no completely bare spots... and many areas you could hardly tell that they were so short on snow. There was a small section on trail 8 near Shingelton that had some rocks kicked up, but we were all pleasantly surprised and would go back to those conditions again. I will say it was warm on Sunday when we left..I imagine some of what was there then has been lost, but this past week was not nearly as bad as people anticipated it would be.

Munising is really getting hit good right now! 8-10" of fresh snow. Trails will be excellent after today! I'm a little southwest of Munising right now.

Thanks again for the replies, my wife's been watching the snow up there on peoples FB posts. Looks like things will get better quick if it stays cold, and I think it's supposed to for awhile now.

1/8 thru 1/10 … Rode 715 miles in 2 1/2 days & 90% was very good, like mid season conditions. Seney, Grand Marais, Pine Stump, Munising, Wetmore, Little Lake, Shingleton, Manistique and Marquette were all very good with plenty of snow cover. Gwinn was thin, usually is for some reason but passable, Jackpine area was not groomed yet as of Thursday noonish but may be now??? Munising Wetmore trail 8 rail grade was the best I have seen it for years, flat like a bowling ally for miles. & even by Thursday night the trail 8 from Beartrap to Seney was still in good shape. Lot of sleds showing up as of Thursday night so its going to be busy this weekend.

I wonder how it is now!

HIGH TRAFFIC WEEKEND RECOVERY IN PROGRESS
The team is working to recover from the busiest weekend of the season – so far. The trails have been kept as flat as possible through the weekend but we need to take time for serious cutting to get the rock hard base of the moguls removed. Overall the trail system is in good condition, by Alger SORVA standards more snow is needed to bump the rating up. Our Pisten Bully is expected to be back on the trails this Tuesday night at the latest which will be nice. The Spare has thankfully kept us going but the narrower tracks just don’t have the pulling power. Other good news is our New Deere is getting the tracks installed this week so delivery should be soon.

just got back last night from 3 days -- monday to wednesday. I consider myself to be more critical of conditions than most. Trails where in very good condition. The cold helped them stay fairly flat and solid until mid afternoon each day. good job groomers.
