so I bought a 583 engine for 50 bucks and it came with extra parts, so I tore the engine down to rebuild it and it has a big weight on the flywheel, I am a polaris guy and nothing I have ever seen has that weight on the flywheel. can I just take it off? I am just curious because polaris doesnt run one, do I really need it, seems to just rob hp

I have to believe the engineers have that weight there for a reason. It may act as a dampener to minimize vibration or balance or whatever but I would believe the weight is critical to proper engine performance. It more than likely is weighted to offset and equal the weight of the clutch on the other side of the motor.

Bingo. Some of the early model 670's had them on the primary clutch.

The clutch is neutral balance, the weight on the flywheel is to balance the crank. Leave it on. Good luck

If you remove it the engine will develop harmonic
vibrations and lots of strange things happen.
Head bolts snap, clutches shake loose or crack
its there for a reason. Tried to run a race engine
without it and couldn't.
