I had a jackshaft bearing go out last week and the best mechanic I know, rp7x, was fixing it for me. We were able to get the outer race and bearings out, but the inner race was being impossible. He tried heat and everything he could think of and it just wasn't budging. He came up with this idea and we were able to get it out! He welded a pipe onto the race and with just a bit of effort, off it came. Great job!

In theory, thats what auto mechanics do when you break off a bolt when attempting to change an alternator on some vehicles (Honda for example) - works great!

The welding, even though not much, helps break it loose. So not much effort is needed to pull it off. I do this on farm machinery, weld a broken bead around the race, and it pops loose. A couple of taps with a hammer, usually does it.

trick used at my shop as well, its the heat, its difficult to heat just the inner race without also heating the shaft under it with a torch, unless you have a heat-ducter to do it with. The welding to the race will heat the race up rapidly without really heating the shaft which will expand the race and come off easily.
