New Dodge Ram 8 speed

Lookin at a new truck and wondering about getting the 8 speed rotary shifter (TorqueFlite 8-spd Auto 8HP70 trans w/ rotary shifter) is what the window sticker calls it.
Any one have one, likes ? dislikes ? Trying to keep as low as possible but I cant find a 6 speed around that we like. The truck we are looking at has a 3.55 rear end and as far as pulling I dont see a probem cause all I tow is an enclosed 2 place and small utility trailers. Any constuctive thoughts or criticism?

Look below at the sticker on the axle and make sure it's a 3.55. A lot of people were ordering 3.55 however they were getting 3.21.

Otherwise besides a few people that have had a few problems with stuff covered by warranty, (which every radical change will have) it seems like its a great truck to have per reviews.

My '13 is a 6 speed, but if you look over at famforumz.com you can probably find everything you need to know.

You'll get the best MPG with that 8-speed. One of the primary reasons auto tranny's are getting more "speeds".

I think someone on here before said that the gas mileage was nice, but when they were towing it was constantly downshifting. Probabably not a huge issue, but if you do a lot of towing I think that all that down shifting would eat away at the tranny

The web has lots of shift issues with this tranny....

Here is the shift patterns:

870/845RE Ratios:
4.71:1
3.14:1
2.10:1
1.67:1
1.29:1
1.00:1
0.84:1
0.67:1

Available rearend ratios are:
3.21 for both V6 and Hemi
3.55 for both V6 and Hemi
3.92 for Hemi only

The newer units should NOT be made in Germany, but rather made in Indiana and from what I can gleen, somewhat refined per my "insider" engineer at Chrysler who works in Auburn Hills. Though not working on transmissions, he does hear the "inside scoup" on some of this stuff and so far no earth shaking news good or bad has come out. (My last Chrysler was a Pacifica and he said it was a good machine if you didn't mind hitting your head on the door jam each time you get in it, which I have affirmed on at least a thousand entries...perhaps more.)

However, I notice that the 8 speed is NOT rated for heavy service trucks making me believe that this unit was built more for good gas mileage than service work.

Still, it is too new to tell how this unit will fair, and the jury is still out even with 2 programing changes for it.

Like anything else, industry looks for those who ford ahead and become test pilots for those who prefer to sit back and live with a more tried and tested unit.

This doesn't mean that after the bugs get out, and production issues are solved it won't be a good one, but that time will do the testing on the life of the unit...and there is no substitue for putting the unit out in vehicles and letting the public "work" on them and find out any isues they may develope or get corrected over the working life of a tranny.

In a nut shell if the tranny that goes bad is the one you bought, no matter who the maker was, it becomes THE issue and YOUR problem.

Ah, where is a good horse and buggy when you need one! Good luck and keep us posted on how YOUR machine works out.

Thanks for the feedback, after getting two dealerships arguing who wanted my money the most vs the most money we pulled the trigger. Just now getting it brought from the furthur away dealer to one that is closer.
Bought a '13 Crew with Hemi, SLT Big Horn, topper, tow mirrors, 32 gallon tank, Mopar side steps, LineX spray in bedliner and 3.55 rear end. All the things that I wanted and payment is only going up $3 for 3 years newer and more room than my current Ram. This will be the 5th Ram that I have owned and I have no regrets. I guess I cant complain. It should be good for gas mileage and my towing that I do. I will post pictures as soon as they get it in and ready (going to have to wait for topper but I knew that)
and I have a warranty so anything funky happens with the tranny I am covered

Nice. A new Ram is on my list too. Just waiting for my old Dakota to give me a reason. Might be a long wait though...

I have a 13' Ram 1500 Laramie I bought in april and have almost 20,000 miles already. It has the 8spd, 5.7 Hemi and the 3.21 rear end. I absolutely love the truck (Coming from a Tacoma). If I drive civilized (58-60mph) I get 22 mpg. Interstate driving at 72mph i get about 18mpg. fuel econ is wonderful. better than my tacoma and its twice the truck. I usually pull a 7x16 enclosed trailer and it handles that wonderfully with less than 5,000lbs behind. Dont even feel the trailer.. I pulled about 9,400lbs cross country from WI to NY this summer and the truck performed great. Used the tow/haul function and sometimes manually controlled the gears in hilly areas and it was flawless. Mine also has the new air ride which is great. fun for off roading and works well for leveling out trailers. My trany is an orginal, german made one but I believe at some point Ram is/already did start making the trany elsewhere. I am happy I have the german made trany. the similar trany has been in numerous high end cars for a few years with out issue. The dial shifter is awesome also.

Thanks all! I have ordered a couple of decals off ebay for the topper when that comes in. We love the truck and the extra cab room. We dont have kids but it will nice to have the extra room for the neices and nephews (who are getting older) and for my in laws when we do a trip together.

That's a nice looking truck, kinda interested in this new v6 diesel that is coming out soon even thou I'm a ford guy.

They are ready to go whenever the market can support it. I worked at the Federal-Mogul plant that made the rings for the GM, Ford and Cummins small engines. I talked with an engineer at Cummins and word is they arent' in a hurry to get it to market, something about paying the extra money for the diesel. Hopefully soon....

I'm not sure how an engineer at cummins would know, seeing as its not a cummins motor going in the 1500s.

It was 4 years ago. I saw the results of the PPAP tests at our site. I think Ford and GM had small V6's and Cummins was a small inline.
