Will be interested in reading these replies! I have 7200 miles on my wife's Indy XLT. One buddy says replace rings and pistons now, other buddy says run it as long as compression is good. Both guys are excellent snowmobile fixers.

What is the compression?? I put rings in my 800 and 600 doo's at 5000 miles as prevenitive measure. 600 still had hatch marks in the cylinders so could have definatly gone longer. If it ain't showin problems and compression is good I would leave it alone for now.

I had a 2000 Polaris triple. At 4400 miles it needed a piston (carb slide broke and took out the ring) and the dealer reused the rings. Fast forward to 7000 miles, seals leaking and dealer again said "rings are fine, just needs upper seals". Replaced seals and ran it to 8200 miles and it still ran great. Compression was starting to drop and rings would have been needed soon.

I would think 6-7K is average before a compression drop, sometimes (as we know) much sooner. If you're going in to do other work do the rings, otherwise just watch the compression and you'll know when it's time.

Compression is the guide. If it is above 120, run it. keep them both within 10% of each other. If you want an inspection, pull the y-pipe and have a look in there. that will tell you a lot about the condition of the cyl. walls. Keep the power valves clean too.

I have 9200 miles on my Ski doo 600 sdi and still runs like the day I got it. You probably are due for new primary and secondary springs.

As the old saying goes, if it aint broke don't fix it. I would still keep eye on the compression of both cyl, this is good P.M.
