new snowmobile jacket rant...lol

I had been eying this jacket for a couple years and must admit, I really dug the way it looked...and since it had ski-doo's name on it I thought it to be a safe bet.

So after trolling ebay forever I finally snagged one, brand new, 100 bucks!!! (Now keep in mind I'm from southern Indiana and there is really no place to go and try these things on and look them over.)

When it came in I could barely contain my excitement, my first "real sled jacket" lol.

After trying on and modeling it for my wife I began to notice the teeth on the zipper track were somewhat small, or fine. Sure enough, zipping it up without binding the teeth proved tricky, but could be done with practice. Then, when zipped up, the teeth had the tendency to separate at the bottom and the coat would slowly open from the bottom if not properly executed.

Thankfully it made it to the last day of out trip before the zipper itself went "toink" and popped off rendering the coat unable to seal up. So I took the coat off along with the fleece pullover I had on underneath it. I then put the coat on first and with the help of my friends was able to stretch the fleece pullover OVER the jacket to the amusement of my friends and ride back to the hotel.

With the exception of the zipper the coat itself was awesome. Incredibly warm, I had no problems during the cold snap in mid jan this year.

Now what I couldn't get over is why someone would design a coat with a such flimsy zipper on it? Thankfully I didn't spend the 200-300 bucks I had seen them advertised for.

So now I am at the point where I can have a new zipper put on and run the risk of going through all this over again or just get another coat.

I kinda have been digging this pullover by HMK but I understand there is no insulation to it, just a shell, so yeah I dont know if it would be worth it to get one for almost 200 bucks.

Anyone have any thoughts on this thing???

Oh and BTW this past seasons trip was still probably the most awesome we had ever gone on despite having to take our friend to the ER 10 minuets into the ride and having every single piece of gear I bought end up being a flop!!!

Cool Jacket!! If it was me and I really liked it and it kept me warm I would find a good local taylor and have a new, high quality, zipper put back on. I can't comment on the pullover, sorry.

Sorry about your friend, hope it was nothing too serious.

I would say the same about the zipper get it fixed. Put a nice YKK zipper on the the jacket.

But if your set on new I have heard good things about HMK. And my wife has one season with FXR gear and loves it. And I thought the FXR really looked like it was made nicely as well. I would consider buying FXR if my Castle stuff would fall a part. But its going in to its 10th season this year a still looks good and keeps me warm and dry. See my profile for pictures of both of are gear. Maybe some of the Yami guys can help out here, I was told the FXR makes the "Genuine Yamaha Gear" for Yamaha and has done it for years before they had the FXR brand out. But that could be just rummer.

By the way your Doo Jacket above looks cool!
