New summertime hobby

Well, I was able to purchase my dream car a few months ago. My buddy in his C6 Vette and I were able to run them on the road course at Gingerman in South Haven, MI recently. It was the most fun I've had without my snowmobile suit on in a long time (I was, coincidentally, wearing my sled helmet!).

The techniques and control to go fast are quite similar to sledding on trails where weight transfer and available traction are important. The 911 will be my yearround commuter car in Chicago, so snow tires have been ordered. I can't wait to drive it in the snow with my kid in the car seat. Has anyone seen the Porsche Everyday commercial that starts out 'Snowmobile'? Oh yeah...

Do they even MAKE snow tires for that beast?
Yep, rears are 295/35 R18 on 11" rims! The car is actually quite good in the snow as the engine (rear) is over the driven wheels (rear). Plenty of traction when combined with proper snow tires. Now, if the snow gets over about 5" deep, that's a different story! But, on 294, not common to have that much snow down.

Then there is the part about the kid in the car seat next to him, that concerns me.-Mezz
My 2 year old sits in the rear and the wife in the front, next to me.

I imagine you could buy a decent winter car for the price of those tires plus the depreciation from driving that poor thing on 294 in the winter.

Wife said I can only have one car. So, snow tires are my plan. Plus, I love driving it and I think I should get a 'think snow' sticker for it! People, especially in Germany, drive them year round. In fact, the original VW beetle was designed rear engine in order for it to handle the winters better.

The vette is definitely faster. Frankly, the vette was incredible. His sport exhaust gurgles and barks so loud, I thought my car was having major issues until I figured it out. As far as handling, I'm not sure which would be faster. We were both in the novice group with an instructor. I've done a few track days in prior cars and he hadn't done much track driving so I could move away pretty easy.

On a track like Gingerman, a 911 will outperform a Vette, particularly if you run several laps. The brakes on a Porsche are the best and I have seen Vettes experience brake fade real quick.

As for a winter car, buy a tire rim combination from Tire Rack and switch them out with the seasons. Be patient on the buying the tires and get some winter rims at a bargain. Be sure to store tires in trash bags closed, it slows the oxidation of the rubber.

Enjoy....
