Next weekend, heading to MI...where to start/stay?

Hoping to trailer from the Twin Cities and Try and stay as far South as we could Friday night (knowing there is good snow and grooming has probably started), then Saturday morning wake up and back-pack North to spend the night (Houghton/Hancock??).

Thoughts on where to start/stop? Where to stay?

A good starting point might be LVD casino in Watersmeet MI. Hotel prices are reasonable and you can't get much farther south and still be in the U.P. of MI. It is 75 miles by road from the casino to Houghton.

Just don't drink their water. Just kidding. :) The water issue they had last year has been taken care of.

Boy IDK about Watersmeet to Houghton now?....Mrs Running Bear has not posted anything about WM area & Mr RB is a groomer. Often times BC can be snow starved while north and south of there is better. I was in Lando today about 5 inches and cold...good coverage of dense snow but no groomers going. Try Greenland & north but very early everywhere this weekend.

I saw a post on facebook yesterday saying that the Hancock/Houghton bridge will be up from the 15th-18th of Dec. Not sure if there's any other way around on snowmobile but they made it sound like it'll be hard to cross over until they lower the bridge back down. Might be worth researching if you're heading that way!

Mass City has the Adventure Motel. I think it is the only place to stay in Mass City.

Mass City is in the snow belt region and they always get a lot of snow. The snow belt region drops off once you get to the south side of Military Hill.

Greenland has the Town Hall and Kip at Pat's has a 6 bedroom house, both are for rent and are very nice!

Dibs on Kip's house for this weekend. Question, is grooming happening on all trails or just the grades right now? Do we need daring riders to run the swamps of 13, Freda or Alston? Hope so, have a few buddies who have yet to experience the muck dive and will lead because they don't know any better.

Did the Freda loop today, a little rough, but firm and frozen solid. Trails are groomed in spots, plenty of snow for this early. Anything south of Mass is quite a bit thinner. Snow gets better and better towards Houghton.
