Nikon P500 Coolpix or comparable recommendation

I am looking for a camera for my wife for Christmas we have a Cannon Powershot nothing real nice now and with a new child its hard to get her to sit still for it to focus and shoot so we want a faster shooting camera.
So I may I have made up my mind that the Nikon P500 Coolpix is what I want to get her but I am looking for some insight from someone who may already have one and what they like and dislike about the camera.
I would also like to know if anyone has a recommendation for a camera similar to the P500

We are in the same boat. 5 month old that changes faces or whatever quickly. We bought a Cannon Rebel T2i. If you want professional quality photos, without paying the professional, check this camera out. Takes 3.7 pics per second. Best buy has sales on them from time to time. and being the christmas season, you can prolly find a smokin deal.

I know its not what you asked about, but just giving you another option.

My wife and I went from a Nikon P120 CoolPix to the Canon T2i mainly because of the time it took to focus the Nikon. The picture quality, speed, and versitily are all worth the extra cost to upgrade from a point and shoot to a dslr. We couldn't be happier with our decision. The body and kit lens for the T2i will run about $750 but there are some other good entrly level dslr's like the Nikon 3100, Sony A390, or Canon T1i that will be closer to $500

I made some addtional phone calls and talked to a camra shop, told them what I really thought we wanted and the salesman recommended the Nikon J1 which has less of a zoom feature but faster, focus and processing. So my seach continues. At least I have a few weeks left and by the way the local camra shop is within $30 of the online stores in regards to price.

For what it's worth we have a Nikon Coolpix L24 and while it takes nice photos, it seems like it takes for ever between shots. We have had Canon Powershots almost exclusively prior to the new Nikon and always really liked how they worked. The L24 is on the lower end of the price scale but with the way my wife handles the camera I wasnt going to pay more.

I have had the Sony alpha 100 camera for a few years now. At the time it was one of the better beginner dslr cameras. It does it all point and shoot style. The pictures always turn out great.
I know you can find this camera on ebay nowadays for super cheap.

I am actually looking at upgrading before the end of this year. Better to spend (business expense) than to let uncle sam get it. I am interested in the Nikon d7000. It shoots incredible HD video and can take pictures at the same time. It is pretty expensive at 1800 for the kit I am looking at. I have been reading a lot of reviews. This camera seems to have the most bang for the buck. Many professionals use it.
