Nissan xterra - anyone have any experience with one?

I am sort of looking for a inexpensive small or midsized SUV with a manual transmission. I had a Jeep in college, and I miss it. Just bought the family a new van, so trying to keep my vehicle costs down. Looking for something in the $5000 - 7000 range, preferably with around 100,000 or fewer miles. I would really like to get a Cherokee, but they are getting hard to find with a manual tranmission. While I'm still looking for one of those, I have also been looking at other options, and I was thinking about an xterra. Did a quick search on autotrader and quite a few came up with stick shifts. The newer ones are expensive, but those around the 2001-02 may hit that price range. Anyway, just wondering if anyone had any experience with them, good or bad.

Pretty good vehicle. Watch rust. Look good around front shock tower area . Parts seem to wear at about that many miles. I would look at a wrangler with a 6 cyl. Easy to repair less to repair mechanically. We have a few wranglers tough as nails but again watch the rust .

Yeah, I had a 92 Wrangler before. Would like to get another but they are pricey these days....maybe it's worth holding off for one.

I owned an 01 5speed v6 x-terra for four years until I hit an ATT truck a few months ago. I bought it for 4000 in 07, so 5-7k is waaaaay too much for one. Problems I had - broken torsion bar in front, fuel pump pressure regulator went out, fuel mileage isn't good even for what it is, especially for the given power.

As for capability, I guess you never know where "the line" is, but I never did get her stuck through a few thousand UP miles.
