No lights on early 2000's 800 RMK

Hey Everybody,

The neighbors son apparently aquired a early 2000's Polaris 800 RMK. Yesterday I saw him riding around without lights, , hours later he came over to my place and asked me what might be the problem. Haveing been around sleds for a bunch of years and doing a bunch of rebuilds I think I know enough to be dangerous. ;)
I said very likely it would either be a bad voltage regulator or a bad ground.
Question - does anybody know how to test a voltage regulator? Is it possible to test one?
He and his buds were wiggling wires and apparently the tach and speedo lights came on but that's it.

Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

Would that effect the tail light as well? I supose the test there would be a simple continuity test? Or if the switch is melted bad enough I would imagine it just wouldn't function.
Any idea on why the switch melts? Will it happen again?

It took a while but I got a little more info on the neighbors sled, , with no lights. It is a 2001 RMK 800, and as mentioned the lights do not work, rp7x asked if the the hand warmers get hot, they do not get hot either.
Do the hand warmers run through the voltage regulator as well?
Any other input or ideas/things to check would be greatly appriciated.

Oh, is there any where (website or on line manual) that I could go out to and pull down a service manual and or wiring diagram for this 01, 800 RMK?

Thanks!

Start by replacing the voltage regulator it should be located by the chain case. The part # 4010793 $65.00 . After you replace the regulator you might need to look at and replace the light bulbs because the blue out from over voltage.

Thanks for the info raceinsnow I appreciate it! I figured a possible telltale sign of the voltage regulator going out would be burned out bulbs, so I thought I'd check a few bulbs first.

On a Polaris you have to check the load shed module. This devise controls the voltage to ground and the lights and handle bar warmers feed thru it. Also had a problem with the dimmer switch no lights. Don't know how to check load shed module other then running wire to ground and by passing it.

edmarino, I've never heard of a load shed module. Does this work in conjunction with the voltage regulator? Where is the load shed module located?

Unplug the yellow wire at the regulator and check the voltage at idle speed only. It should be around 10 volts, depending on idle RPM.

Plug the yellow wire back in and check voltage at idle again. If you see a drop in voltage you will know if it is shorting out.

If you see no change in voltage try increasing RPM slowly it should stop at about 13-14 volts. If it goes above 15 volts the regulator is not controlling the voltage and it probably burned out all the bulbs.

Then, off to the parts store to buy a regulator and new bulbs.

It does control the load to ground, how exactly I am not sure. Or do I know why Polaris has them. But if you go to Babbitts.com and look at battery layout for your machine it should show you the location, Mine is mounted on a bracket which is attached to the front of the battery holder.

Awesome, thanks everybody! What with the impending snow coming in the next few days :D :D I better get to work on this thing. I'm sure the kid is itching to ride past dark, , , and with warm hands.

I checked Babbits .com and they do not show a Load shed module for an 800RMK . They don't even show a battery , so I stand corrected .You are going to have to look else where for your problem. They do show a Voltage regulator.
