Took all day And switched out hot water heater and dryer to electric. At the cost of 600 dollars .. Cool thing is I left the old ones in place .. dryer is still being used till my 2.65/gal propane is gone .. and left the old hot water heater in as a holding tank to bring the well water up to room temp before heating it .. will see how this works ...

Pre tank makes a big difference. If water is 40 to 50 coming out of the ground instead of 70's room temp, it takes a lot more energy to heat. I use this set up. On my second (electric) tank, I have a thermo siphon set up with a loop in the wood burner. If you have a wood burner this is a good way to save more energy.

Both tanks are in same room as wood burner. First one is just pre tank to help bring up to room temp.
The second tank is electric. I use electric when not heating with wood burner. Considering solar set up for non heating season.
This set up makes plenty of hot water for my normal use. 2 people. When I have company for snowmobiling, I kick on the electric to keep up with demand supplemented by the wood still.

Here is the design I used. (provided by www.hilkoil.com) This is where I purchased the stainless steel loop to install in the wood burner.

My electric water heater costs close to 50$ a month to run. This has paid for it self time and time again.
First best thing I did to save energy in my home was the wood burner.
Second is this water heater set up.
Hope you find this info useful.

I did the same with dryer bit off the cost to run 220 cut back on propane use worked out very well for me too. I'm considering changing out hot water heater to electric too but plumbers not exited about it saying water too cold coming out of the ground but last time I considered was 7 years ago so maybe electric hotwater tech has improved?

White,

Our place on LG has frigid water coming out of the ground (I think our supply pipe might be buried a bit too close to the surface) and our electric hot water heater does just fine. It is a 50 gal dual element. Now if you are talking on demand I could see a potential issue...

We left the old hot water tank in just to help with the heating of the cold ground. Donna took a shower this morning ..first time the water stayed hot .. maybe now we can use the jet tub.. was never able to fill it with hot water ..
