No trailer title ??

I found a trailer for sale here in Illinois, but the owner does not have the title because he bought it in Wisconsin? Why would that matter? Unless he is thinking the registration.

How would a guy know it wasn't stolen?

How much of a pain would it be to get it registered in Illinois?

Any thoughts?

Wisconsin doesn't require you to register a trailer if it is under 3000lbs.

No clue to figure out if it was stolen. You could call the SP or someone with the VIN number.

I heard if you lose a title for a trailer it can be registered as a homemade trailer and that you can get a title that states it was homemade. I had a homemade jetski trailer that definitely wasn't homemade for what it is worth.

Lost Title

I would like to hear how that works also. I am looking to buy a two place covered trailer from a friend and he can't find the title. I have heard the homemade route also. I think if you go to a driver license facilty for the state of Illinois they should be able to point us in the right direction.

In Michigan you have to go to a " registered / official " scale. The kind that truckers use, pay the $9.80 for the weight and take the documantation into your local Sec. of State , fill out a Cert of origin-homemade trailer title application / registration / pay for the plate and away you go. I too had 1 of those homemade jet ski trailers. IN Michigan it's all about the STATE getting more of your money, I don't think they could care if it's actually stolen. That means that someone would have to do some work and we couldn't have that !

If it has a VIN number on it, that will make your quest a little easier. If no VIN number, it may need to be inspected by a state certified inspecter, usually a cop. It will need to pass to go any further. If you think it won't pass, take a chance without a plate or don't buy it.
