North end of Keweenaw still open for riding

Hi all. I just got off the phone with the DNR and our groomer boss and we have been given the green light to continue grooming operations for this week and weekend, as long as weather permits. It looks like it will do just that. The grooming will be done from CALUMET NORTH. Conditions in and around Houghton/Hancock do not warrant grooming and we even pulled our equipment from that area so that we could get it to their summer storage areas before we had to run them on gravel.

So you can still come on up and ride. Stay where ever you want, but if you want to ride right from your motel, then best to think about Calumet north. The other trails will still be open, but not maintained.

So I come to you with ears pinned back and my tail between my legs.
But upon further review... We have been told that riding in the Keweenaw will only be allowed on trails that use state land. That would be trail 3 from Toivola to Houghton and then trails 3 and 17 from Hancock to Calumet and back.
My sincerest apologies for causing such a ruckus and confusion, it was the LAST thing I wanted to do. A communications issue between the DNR and myself and I will certainly take credit for my responsibility in the mix up. Also, trail 3 from Toivola to Mass City is on state owned land, so it is fine to ride as well.
Sorry!

So just trail 3 and 17 are open and legal to ride? And just from Houghton to Calumet and Mass to Houghton? Or up to Copper Harbor?

Was thinking about coming up for a couple days this week to try a few things.

That is correct. 3 and 17 are the only trails open for riding.

Just trying to make sure I understand what's happening where. Trails on public land are open (which is usually a debate annually) so those are 3 and 17 between Houghton and Calumet, but in the OP John said grooming was only happening north of Calumet and not down to Hancock. So are any of the open trails being groomed?

No. The DNR is not allowing any grooming to happen on any trail. The ironic thing is that the trails still open have the least amount of snow coverage as a whole. Once you are north of Hancock, 17 is OK to Calumet and then back down to around Lake Linden/Hubbell, but starts to get thin again as it heads to Dollar Bay. I cannot comment on how things are south of the bridge, but would guess from South Range to Mass City there is ample snow cover.

Not to copper though.
Not "to copper"?

Bulletin: There's copper all over the "Copper Country/Keweenaw", ride anywhere on (or off) those trails and you won't be riding "to copper", you'll be riding on copper.

Unless you meant "to Copper Harbor", an unincorporated community and census-designated place in northeastern Keweenaw County.

There's a zillion places and things "copper" in the western UP.
A "furriner" perhaps, but no Yooper would ever refer to Copper Harbor as "copper" — maybe "the Harbor" — when there would be no risk of confusion with Eagle Harbor.
(Never mind proper nouns are supposed to be capitalized.) :cower:
[English is a dying language!]
