Got up to the cabin this weekend and had some great riding. Rode up into the Isabella area and near Lake Isabella and ran some rivers and forest roads. Ran into a surprising amount of plowed forest roads which sucked. Trails were all very good. The sun is doing damage on the plowed forest roads right now.

My son and I went out today and rode up the river. He put almost 10 miles on the 120 today. Talk about a long ride!!!

Hey Elf, we rode from the Finland lot on Saturday. I can't remember the last time I saw the Tomahawk in such good condition, all the way from the state trail to Isabella. The roughest trail we saw all day was the stretch from the state trail / Moose Walk intersection down to Silver Bay. And, that wasn't bad, just not quite as good as the rest of the trails.

Canoepaddler - we ran the tomahawk from where the timberwolf joins it up to one of our top secret jumping off points and it was good, best I've seen all year. Actually, it's the first time all year we rode any of it, except for the stretch from the NSST to the Trestle.

Can't remember who asked but it was the Baptism river my son and I were running. He wanted to go all the way to Finland but his thumb got sore so we turned around. Couldn't believe that thing made it 10 miles on a tank of gas.

Thanks ELF! Will be up March 11th. We usually do trails one day, then forrest roads/lakes & portages a couple days. Would really like to try the bapstim..that always looks neat. Can you shoot me a note and let me know where we could jump on the river? Thanks!

Justin,
When we run the Baptism we just usually jump on it right in Finland and run down to the Hwy 1 bridge. We've ran the east branch north of Finland upriver before but not very far.

Ubee, we are a little low on snow this year. The warm weather over the weekend really set it up so you don't sink down in it. But the trails are still excellent and I would bet the snow depth in the woods is still 30" or more.

i was in two harbors and rode to lutsen with the wife and kids and i couldn't believe how good the conditions were on saturday, my wife and kids kept saying lets go farther, it was the longest ride ever with her and the kids 225 miles, that breaks the record from last year of 110 miles in 1 day

elf,

we try to get up there a couple times a year, we have heard that there are a couple or were a couple of al capones old cabins around silver bay. I have heard one is way up heffelinger road and the other you can see from the scenic over look in silver bay, the overlook that is on the top of the huge cliff. do you know any thing about the cabins. I heard the one up heffelinger road burned down, but the other you can see way down in the valley below the overlook. we kind of want to try to find them and get to them this weekend, do you have any ideas or info on locations?

Tom,
Never heard about any of Al Capones cabins. I've been to the very end of Hefflefinger many times and have never seen anything. Not sure about what overlook you are talking about, is it the one in Tettagouchee over looking Lake Superior or is it the one off the moosewalk trail right by the shelter?

Glad you had a good time. The NSST was in excellent shape on Saturday, we only ran it for about 2 miles but were we where is usually a high traffic area. All the trails hit were very good Saturday and Sunday. Even the Tomahawk was good on Saturday, which is unusual!

We had quite the meal on Saturday on the trail, brats, beans, and even cooked some potatoes, followed off by some marshmallows

Thanks ELF, Iam planing on my annual March 12-22 spring break to ride/fish nw Ontario with my brother again.I have been using Finland as my snow guauge for yrs. My bro is about 70 miles nw of ThunderBay and about 105 miles almost straight north of Grand Maris. Seems like Finland gets the most snow along the north shore.Quite a difference for my brother also between Shebandowan and Thunderbay.1997 rode from Boulder Junction to Shebandowan ,Ont. via the Gunflint trail. 3days up 3 days back ,,nice easy ride! there was always more snow up ontop of the hill during the trip! You have a awesome area to play in!!

Its the at the shelter on the moose walk, thanks for reminding me.

We have heard from several sources that if you look down off the cliff there is a small cabin, way down at the bottom that was one of capones cabins, the other one on heffelinger has been burned down for about 5-8 years or so. Some guy from silver bay burned it down is what we heard. I have a buddy who has pics of it inside and out from the mid 90s. Leeroy at the wildhurst says its way down the road, and they bave been logging it

Tom K,
I'll have to check on that cabin. I think we are riding that direction on Saturday so we'll stop at the overlook and look around. Leroy would be the guy to ask so if he says it's there, it should be there. To get to it would probably be a shoot of the hefflefinger but they have it plowed quite aways in this year.

Ubee, have a great trip, that sounds like fun.

I looked earlier today on Google Earth also but can't see a cabin site in there anywhere. You could probably run up the river that crosses the NSST right before you go up the hill just east of that ridge. Or go up Hefflefinger aways from the moosewalk crossing and cut of that logging road. I bet that the Hefflefinger is mud this weekend though.

I liked yahoos satellite views better than Google, they are newer and I could actually see out cabin on theirs. Maybe we'll see you on the trails this weekend, I'll be on a 2010 600RMK, my wife on a GTX500SS 2 up and my dad will be along on a late 90's 500SKS. And we'll have 2 kids with as usual
