On Friday sweeperguy, my son Justin and myself rode up on the the Northshore. Most of the trails were good with 4" of fresh snow on them. The CJ Ramstad (state) trail was quite good and well snow covered. Hit the Moosewalk trail which was in good condition and well groomed. Back onto the state trail and up to the Trestle on good trails. The Tomohawk trail was groomed and cleared from the Trestle to about a mile or so past the gravel pit. After that it is a mess with hanging down trees. It is passable but it is a long slow ride to get to the Timberwolf trail. This area is going to take some time to open up. We did not continue to the Knotted Pine because it looked like the trail had trees hanging over the trail going up that way too. We headed down the Timberwolf trail which was groomed and in good condition. We headed back to the Moose walk trail to the State trail. It was good and groomed well. Went into Finland quick for gas, the spur trail was rough but rideable. We took the Lax Lake trail next. It was fine until after the Silver Bay trail intersection. It was cleared but not groomed. Lots of snow. We did not go across the lake because of not knowing conditions. Once on the Silver Bay spur we were blessed with a smooth trail. We headed back on the state trail which was still good. A little ice in a corner here and there.
It was a great ride. We ended up with 150 miles on for the short day and it was definitely worth the drive up there for the day. Thanks for coming sweeperguy, it was great having you!

I also just got home from a weekend in Finland. Great people, great time, trails were at a (late) early season condition. State trail was in the best condition.
State groomer is so much bigger and powerful than spur groomers. They can do a lot on only two passes. Moose walk was in excellent condition. Probably only 25% of normal traffic. No boondocking yet, only 15-20" of snow. lot o' rocks and stumps. Night riding on the north shore is amazing, we rode until 2am Friday night saw almost no one. Our place has great cabins. Riding at 0 degrees is doable, wind is not an issue in those woods.
