Wanting to plan a trip between Christmas and New Year's to northern lower Michigan and trying to get some help on where to go and where to stay. We have never been to lower Michigan and we are looking for somewhere new besides the UP. Any suggestions or recommendations? I can't find a lot of info. Thanks Brian

Upper middle of the state, we like the Gaylord/Grayling area. West and a little south you have the Baldwin/Cadillac area which is a fun area. This website will get you started msasnow.org

I'm doing the same thing Polarbear. we usually stay at Fay's Motel in Grayling or the Waters Inn in Gaylord. if going to Cadillac we stay at The Sands.

http://coyotecrossingresort.com/ is near Cadillac, MI with access to the trails and a full service restaurant. You can travel north to Cadillac and south to Irons/Baldwin. Irons/Baldwin has 300 miles of trails. I would not recommend staying in Baldwin or at the Red Moose Lodge, great for snowmobiling but lacks in lodging catering to snowmobiling. Baldwin caters more to fishing. Coyote Crossing also has an owner that rides and he grooms. CCR posts reliable snow reports and that is refreshing!!!!

All depends on how long you want to drive. My suggestion would be to go to St Ignace (if you haven't been there) just on the north side of the bridge. You then have the option of riding the UP or LP. The up you could easily do a day trip ride to Tahquamenon Falls. Next day go south of the bridge and drop in Cheboygan or Indian River for the day. The Budget Host in Iggy is a good place to stay, trail right by it.

If you're coming from Northern WI and want make plans for that time of year, I wouldn't plan on it. There're nice areas in either of the main hubs (Cadillac, Grayling), but snow is very high demand in those areas over the Holidays and often in short supply.
