When and where are you looking Wayne, May be interested.
Looking at sometime in Feb. and late season end of march as a possibility. Doug and I would love to have you along. We can work out details at Cooke City. We are looking for an inline 3 place trailer right now for just such adventures.

1206.jpg 331.jpg 94.jpg Kev, Actually we go on a spur of the moment for Wawa and North towards Hillsport. Chapleau is a stretch but I can get free lodging there. Usually make it a 2-3 day off trail trip. I have plenty of good riding places to keep us busy just out of the Badlands.

When you say "2-3 day off trail trip" do you mean destination riding via off trail, or do you mean 2-3 days of riding via trail, while playing off trail along the way? I've always wanted to do an off trail trip where I had to get somewhere besides back to the truck.

Due to limited lodging in the winter (due to lack of business) we mostly due loops out and back using trails to get out of town. Locals have showed me many of their "trails" and lake crossings to get around quickly. I have also done combination 7day trail/off trail trips up there. But since finding some prime off trail spots I concentrate on them. Wawa,http://www.wawasnoriders.com/
Hillsport http://www.hillsporthillton.com/adventureriders.html and Chapleau all have prime areas.http://www.algomatrails.com/n_connection.php Algoma mtn. range is between the blue trail lines on map. Note lower orange dashed trail that never opens from Halfway Haven to Chapleau.

Also Keep in mind, their is limited Gas, Searchmont no longer has gas, Halfway haven is hit or miss, best to call ahead, I have also heard D-ville has no gas, and the Motel is also closed. My favorite Motel in Wawa is no longer open in Winter, Lots has changed since the last time I rode Ontario, use to buy a season Pa$$, and rode every other weekend, but have not rode across the boarder since 06'

Kev, It is getting pretty lean up there. Sure miss the Northern Lights Motel, they still open for summer, Mo and John run a fantastic motel. We now stay at Wawa motor Inn, Petro acrross the street. Hornpayne is also all but closed. Dubruilville lumber mill is closed but I heard they have kept the gas station open. the skidoo dealer there opens and closes just as fast. Also I think they have gas at a new place right when you come into town off the Magpie (from the south). Manitouwadge is all but shut down. Hawk Junction gas is dicey, I think Ernies in Missiwabee still has gas and great food. No matter what if your going from the soo to Wawa you must get gas at halfway haven or you will end up there for awhile, even etecs won't make it.. So the new 3.3 gallon Mtn. Addiction spare tank will come in handy. Wawa has a 2-3 gas stations, they are full serve even. (probably to prevent drive offs.) Anyways we still go. I know ways out of Wawa that saves a ton of gas over the trails anyday. Oh there are no guard rails on the train bridge that is about to fall into the Magpie river, but heck it saves a ton of city street riding and trail miles. Love it.

I for one hope Ontario riding recovers. I won't be able to get out much over the next two years, but I'd like to hit Ontario for a long trip the year after that.

Your correct. I just called them. Not good. This means straight up to Wawa. Halfway will reopen May 1. Glad I got to do all the loops and such in the early 2000's. Still Queens land riding is avail. just weeds out some.

It is the permit fee. $200 by Dec1. $250 after that. They need to rethink this before all us west Michigan Dutch will ride the trails there. But if the trails are not open you can ride without permit.

That and exchange rate these days and the high gas prices, which is a factor for those who would be riding a lot of miles on the trail (sounds like you do mostly off trail there). We wanted to do something different than the usual UP/Wisconsin trip, so last season I started pricing out a 4-5 day trip in Ontario. Once you factor in the gas prices and the permit price, we ended up just going out to the Togwotee area and renting mountain sleds out there. When we go fishing in Ontario, you can get some of the sales tax back as a rebate for tourist. You'd think there would be some way the sledding community could do that for gas for sleds, since that's the biggest expense of a sledding trip up there. I really want to ride up there at some point though.
